Bandwidth Consumption

I use 3Com Network Supervisor to monitor the pc's on my VPN.

I want to now how much bandwidth is being used when running Remote Desktop connections and how can i monitor the amount of data transfered between client and server?

Is bandwidth being used up by pinging workstations?

I'll throw a vote to NTOP. It'll tell you exactly what you want to know - for free!
Here's a Win32 port if you don't have Linux around

OK, my 3Com network supervisor pings 83 stations accross 4 routers with interval of 10 seconds. We have DSL 512 connection. Will i reach a bandidth usage of 7Gb in 10 days only by running 3Com Netork Supervisor?

Something is eating up our bandwidth, i'm talking about an average of 13gb per month. Here in South Africa we are capped to 3gb international.

Out of 83 users, I have 12 e-mail users and 7 internet users.

The average mail being sent is about 30mb per day.

What else could i check?

Bandwidth management is now becoming crucial to our company.
If you install NTOP today, you'll know by tomorrow exactly what (and who) is eating up your bandwidth
Are you talking about Bandwidth or Data Transfer?  Gb is GigaBIT and GB is GigaBYTE.  Big difference.

Ok, check my math.  I did a capture of a ping and the reply.  A Ping is 74 bytes and the reply is 74 bytes.

You're pinging 83 devices - so that's 6142 bytes - one way, every 10 seconds.

86400 seconds in a day (60*60*24)/10=8640 times a day.

So, you're sending out 106,133,760 Bytes - or 101.217MB/day.  * 30 days/mo = 2.96GB/Month! (give or take).

You might want to consider toning it down a bit.  We use Solarwinds Orion for network monitoring - and we only poll every 2 minutes.
Agree that 10 second polling is excessive.
2 minutes is more than adequate.
5 minutes would serve you well even...

pseudocyber, Thank you for that info. It is more clear to where my bandwidth is going.
Still, there is 7Gb unaccounted for, but i have installed NTOP, and i am seeing a lot more than i bargained for. ;o)
You're welcome.  There's a lot of other traffic which adds up - are you running routing protocols?  Some of them, such as RIP are chatty, vs. others which only communicate when they need to.  Then it depends on your transport protocols, etc.
