The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Server 2003 service pack 2 won't install.  Failed to install catalog files
Tags: 2003, install, service, pack, server
I have been trying to install SP2 for Server 2003 for the last week.  Every time, it crashes out with the 'failed to install catalog files' error.  Then 'Windows Server 2003 has been partially updated and may not work properly.' before it restarts the computer.

I have examined the svcpack.log file and it indicated a problem with about 17 hotfixes.  Installed all of these manually and tried again.  Still the same error.

On examination the log this time stated that only 5 hotfixes failed.  Tried installing these five again but no difference.

The hotfixes don't look like they are installing properly as they finish very quickly and seem to skip the part where files are added. (seen this on at least some of the other hotfixes that now don't appear to be a problem).

Am loathed to uninstall the hotfixes from add and remove as the system states that huge list of applications and hotfixes may not work if I do this.

Have looked at the microsoft article '822798' and gone through all 10 solutions, a couple a few times.

The part of the log that I believe is the problem is:

102.235: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error:  The  update.ver file is not correct.
102.453: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error:  The  update.ver file is not correct.
102.922: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error:  The  update.ver file is not correct.
104.125: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error:  The  update.ver file is not correct.
105.297: Service Pack 2 Setup encountered an error:  The  update.ver file is not correct.

105.766: Failed to open c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB926255\update\updatebr.inf

Really hoping someone knows the solution to this one.

Hi,

This may sound pretty basic, but howabout clearing the temp file before trying again.  I had a similar hang-up.

/F

Have tried all 10 of the answers on the MS article (although only brushed over 6, 7, and 8).

Prior to the last attempt I renamed the Catroot2 folder and removed the temp*.cat file in systemroot%\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}, then restarted.

Firebar - is that what you mean by the temp file?

Yes, basically:

start -> run -> *temp*

Delete all of the contents found...

I would uninstall the hotfixes.  A message will appear saying other apps may not work but this will only be temporary, as you will install SP2 immediately afterwards.  I had a similar problem with a critical update but it didn't affect the running of any apps when i had removed it.

Thanks Cbeee,

This was what I was heading towards do doing.  Definatelty believe my problem is related to those hotfixes.

Still a little scared of the long list of apps and hotfixes it says won't work after uninstall.  Server is in constant use so having to restore it if it goes wrong will be a major headache.

Would you advise running the hotfixes again before SP2 of just trying to install imediately after removing them?  What aout restart after hotfix removal?

Has anyone else removed hotfixes before with out any issues?

04.24.2007 at 04:52AM PDT, ID: 18964843
Would it be possible for you to rebuild the server from scratch. I know this would have to be done after hours but it may be the quickest way forward. Don't forget to backup all your data first (Yes I know "Sucking eggs")

04.24.2007 at 04:53AM PDT, ID: 18964854
Peform a backup > remove hotfixes > reboot > install sp2 > reboot > review hotfixes and install if necessary.

it's likely most of the hotfixes will be contained within sp2.  You can still run the hotfixes after sp2 and you will get a message saying that the system already has the latest update if sp2 contained that hotfix.

here's what i would suggest in order of increasing damage to you existing setup
1. as suggested above, the temp files are in C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp
2. log in as Administrator
3. turn off any anti-virus software, security monitors and managers
4. uninstall ALL of the previous hotfixes Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > (show updates)
remove also .NET, IE, and other microsoft related updates
<you can try reinstalling SP2 here if you want>
5. Control Panel > Add Remove Programs > on the left click Windows components and remove anything that's not immediately necessary
<you can try reinstalling SP2 here if you want>
6. boot into safe mode (after POST hit F8 repeatedly)
<you can try reinstalling SP2 here if you want>
7. boot from a Windows Server 2003 CD, pick install Windows, and then Automatically repair. note: this may unregister all of your installed software...

when you reinstall, be sure to download the SP2 exe file from Microsoft, for x86 or x64 machine respectively, and copy the file to C:\ and run it from there

Here's what I suggest:
First, download the SP2 for IT Professionals to be sure you have the full service pack file.  This file contains all the files needed, not selected files based on what the downloaded 'thinks' the PC needs.  Instead, all lfiles are downloaded and used.

Delete the files in the following directories.

C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
C:\WINDOWS\$Nt* (all these hidden files hidden)

***Backup your registry before any registry editing***

You should delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall for the updates you are experiencing problems with including the service pack installation.  You can find the actually installation package by looking at the folder names in the $Nt before you delete them above.

This will prevent you from installing the same bad hotfixes and possibly corrupt service pack files.

I did find some loose connection to this and the oem*.inf file cache in the c:\windows\inf, but without seeing the actual files, I can't tell you how to proceed on that front yet until I do some testing on my side.

Finally managed to get back to the server today to try a few of the suggestions.

First thing I did was uninstall the hotfixes I could see in the log file.  After 4 restarts of the system they were gone.
Removed all of the files in C:\docs and settings\administrator\local settings\temp.
Attemped to remove all files from C:\windows\temp - unable to as access was denied.

Run the setup file again and got a message about crypto service not running.  Did the usual of stopping service, renaming catroot2 and removing tmp* files from catroot.  Started the crypto service.

Tried again and this time it ran but stalled just after 'backing up registry' - 'Cannot create catolog files'

Tried again and still got the same message.

Have posted one of the recent log entries below.  Unfortunatley can't get the latest as my remote session seems to have crashed.  (hopefully not related).

Couple of things I thought I should mention:  Firstly the majority of the time I have been doing this I have been using remote desktop as Administrator (don't think this is an issue but thought I better mention it), secondly, the server never had sp1 installed.  Think the previous support company tried but gave up as there is an SP1 folder but no files (probably had the same issues I had).

As soon as I can get access again I will post the very latest log entry.

Cheers
