The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Browser fails on Win2K3 AD server

Asked by 1griffith1 in Microsoft Server

This is a Win2K3 server with SP2, and here is my issue.  This server is a domain controller (but not the FSMO for any role).  It was in a rack with the rest of my servers, and the browser worked fine.  Because of upgrades, this server has been relocated to another location on the local network and now, suddenly, the browser doesn't work.

At first, I tried restarting the "Computer Browser" service, but that did no good.  Then I tried rebooting, and the browser would work for a few minutes, but then fail.  Suspecting a cabling problem (our network is very badly cabled, which is a whole other issue), we ran a new cable from the switch where all our servers connect straight to the room where this server has been moved and rebooted.  This helped some (the browser now works several hours before failing), but it still fails.

Lastly, this server has two Broadcom NICs in it that were paired into a redundant pair using the Broadcom NIC configuration software.  I stripped that software out completely and just configured one NIC in the traditional way, hoping that was the problem, but, nope, no change.

The system log has two errors that appear at roughly two hour intervals: error 8021 (cannot retrieve list of servers from the master browser, which is my FSMO) and error 8032 (browser failed to retrieve the back up list too many time), which is the error that causes the browser to shut down.

I thought I'd try to reset ip using the netsh command, but was wondering if anyone else had seen any similar problems.  Nearly everything involving this error on the Internet revolves around XP workstations in a workgroup and the builtin firewall (which I have turned off, BTW).  There doens't seem to be anything about these failures on a server, particularly on a domain controller.

Of course, it could be more problems with the overall network, but since the server has a brand-new Cat6 cable going into my core switch (which show no problems with the connection), I think I've eliminated that as the problem.Start Free Trial
