The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Read & Execute and other NTFS Folder Permission Questions

Asked by csimmons1324 in Microsoft Server, Windows 2003 Server

I have a few questions in regarding NTFS folder permissions.  I have created a folder on our file server called "Production".  I want to share this folder with our "Production Global" group.  I have shared this folder and set the Sharing permissions to Full Control for Everyone.  I then went into the Security permissions, under the Advanced section, and unchecked "All inheritable permissions from the parent...".  I then went back to the main Security tab and added the Production Global group with "List Folder Contents", "Read", and "Write" privileges.

My first question is what exactly is the "Read and Execute" permission?  I have read that it allows users to move through folders to read other files and folders, even if the users do not have permission for those folders, and perform actions permitted by the Read permission and the List Folder Contents permission.  Does this mean that it allows the users to navigate through subfolders within the main folder that this permission is applied to?  If this is the case, why would I want to give "Read and Execute" permission on a folder when all of the subfolders will have permissions applied to the also?

As mentioned above, I gave the Production Global group "List Folder Contents", "Read", and "Write" permissions and hit apply.  However, if I go into the Advanced tab, it shows that the Production Global group has "Read & Execute" and "Special" permissions.  Why is this happening?  Also, it does not show that group having any of the permissions I assigned on the main Security tab.

Thanks,
