The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Win 2003 SBS SP2 Powercycling ACPITABL.DAT
Problems after installing sp2 on windows 2003 sbs (HP ML370 G4)

I'm having a difficult night tonight.  One of my servers, a windows 2003 sbs, is power cycling after a long period (10 min) of starting up the system.  This is after a install of SP2.

I've tried to run safe mode but do not have the local administrator password, as the *$%& I replaced was not very good with his documentation.  BTW, safe mode w/ command prompt is the only successful way to get to a login prompt.  Safe mode with networking leaves it sitting at network settings.

When attempting to run safe mode, it stops at acpitabl.dat...

Hope someone is awake.

Can you reapply the latest PSP (7.80a) from HP while in this mode?

You can download the ISO from HP for free.  The minimum version of PSP is 7.70a for SP2 support.

Before you do that, I've also read that any USB device plugged into the ports can cause this.  Remove any USB devices and try again.

Netman, not sure what you mean.  I can't log in because I don't have the local administrator password.  I can't boot safe with networking because it hangs on network settings.  Normal boot up powercycles during starting windows 2003 (takes a long time too).

If the utilities are bootable, then I can try.  Otherwise, no dice.

06.21.2007 at 07:52PM PDT, ID: 19338652
Nothing in USB to speak of.  Even tried pulling network cable at network settings just in case there was some type of issue there.

Did you check my last comment?

Netman, read your comment and the page you specified.  I have downloaded the utilities, but can't do anything with them because I cannot log in.

I saw that there was a way to change the recovery password, but I'd have to be successfully logged in and using ntdsutil.  So much for that.

Gonna try using a utility to reset the recovery password.  Once that is done, I'll run the uninstall from the command prompt and/or change the update.sys file.

Back in a bit.

Utility is not working (missing a driver for the sa641).  Running out of ideas and body is spent.  I appreciate all the help, any other ideas?

06.21.2007 at 09:55PM PDT, ID: 19339086
managed to reset the password, but now i cannot boot to the command prompt.  Hangs at acpitabl.dat.  Anyone awake?

06.22.2007 at 06:53AM PDT, ID: 19341286
Are you still experiencing problems?  If so, I would highly suggest getting a BIOS update from HP!  If that does not work, let me know as I have another idea as well.  Good luck.

Boot to safe mode now (without network is fine) - try installing PSP now.

06.22.2007 at 12:00PM PDT, ID: 19343917
Safe mode wouldn't work after the utility I ran.  Most of the time it crashed into a Serial3_Initialization_Failure, the other times it just hung.

Gave up, formatted the partition, now i can't even get the system to recognize the new smartstart setup (keeps saying missing operating system).

I keep thinking I'm gonna wake up... But I'm still awake, for the last 32 hours trying to find a solution.  It will most likely have to wait until the weekend, as I am out of juice.  If someone is close I'll toss them the points, but it just looks like I will be condemned to restore from tape (if I can ever get there).

Thanks, D

06.22.2007 at 01:06PM PDT, ID: 19344440
Well, I think that the formatted partition has led you down the road to restore.  I would suggest updating the BIOS first to bring this up to date before you install any SP.  One similar incident you can read about is here: http://weblogs.asp.net/lkempe/archive/2005/04/04/397084.aspx  This is where I got the idea to update the bios and there is some other info there.  Good luck

Missing OS on SmartStart usually indicates the wrong OS choice in the EISA utility.

If you're using an older version of SmartStart either download 7.80 so you can select the correct OS or use Windows 2000 Advanced as your choice.

You should be able to hit F10 at POST and change it - to something besides "Other"

06.25.2007 at 04:45PM PDT, ID: 19360097
Well, its Monday evening, and I've now spent two all nighters trying to resolve.  I built the volume, and installed the OS.  Restore didn't pan out as planned unfortunately.  I had to create all new accounts and mailboxes, and move the desktops onto the new domain.  However, there is still the matter of the old mailstore, which existed on the second volume.  I need to extract the mailboxes from the mail store, any ideas.  Should I reopen this as a new question?

Thanks Netman and Link for your help.

06.25.2007 at 04:52PM PDT, ID: 19360130
I feel for you as I have been there many times myself.  I think this is what you are looking for from MS:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126

06.26.2007 at 02:25PM PDT, ID: 19367972
I have been having difficulty with the recovery storage group idea.  After jumping through all the hoops (offline defrag, backup, I pulled the whitepaper and found that you can only use a RSG for a information store that belongs to that storage group.  The problem is that, because of the lack of a restore, I had to create new everything (AD, exchange items, everything).

So now, I have an exchange database that I cannot mount (even though I have the transaction logs, the streaming and database files).  Am I interpreting this wrong?  Is there any way to extract the mailboxes from the database without mounting it?  My only other alternative is to attempt a restore using another server, but I don't have much faith.

06.26.2007 at 04:27PM PDT, ID: 19368622
Some interesting changes...

I was able to mount the old database by renaming mdbdata to mdbdata.old and moving the files into a new mdbdata folder.  I even got it to mount properly.  However, I couldn't reconnect the accounts, as they were still tied to the old active directory objects.  So right now, I have a bunch of orphaned accounts that I cannot even run the deployment tool against to export to PST.

Any ideas... any way i can possibly associate the database to the new AD or just export to pst?

06.26.2007 at 04:56PM PDT, ID: 19368730
I was in the process of doing some research for you and was unable to find any free way to export to PST files.  There is some third party software from Ontrack called powerconnect that can covert the offline edb files to PST.  There is also software from Quest, Data Recovery for Exchange.

There are also services out there but I have not used them as I used to own Data Recovery from Quest but my license expired and I did not renew:
http://www.dtidata.com/exchange_server_recovery.htm
Perhaps you can give them a call and see how much it would cost as they do free first level troubleshooting and help:
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/05/03/free-exchange-server-data-recovery-software-support/
It might be well worth the money compared to the time to use a server like this or Ontrack.

Sorry I could not be more help with the Active directory,  perhaps someone else has an idea in that regard.  Good luck.
Accepted Solution

Well, services are back up.  I had to use a tool to extract the data, and reimport it into the new database.

Still got a lot of tweaks and changes to make to keep the damn box up, but not before a FULL BACKUP.

Thanks alot for you help all.  I'm going to share the points across the board.
