Question

Setting up a home network

Asked by: thunderchicken

Hello!

I have a belkin wireless router, and a desktop, server and laptop.  I do my primary development work on my laptop which happens to be my work computer.  The laptop connects via domain which is my company.com.  How can I connect the desktop (Vista Pro) and the Server (Windows 2008) so I can use file sharing, printing, etc?  Most importantly, the server is a database server and I can run my program from any computer just connecting to SERVER.

I know how to do it, i don't know how to keep my laptop's settings so I don't have to adjust it everytime I go to work.

          Hi thunderchicken
*When you are at home, away from your domain, you can log on to your domain account, to Domain just like you were at work. And your profile will be loaded from cache. This is called Cached domain logon. But default limit is 10 times, you can modify it by following here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q172931/
*Assuming that you have a DHCP server installed in Server, you can set the wireless router in access point mode so wireless devices will acquire IP from your DHCP server by wireless access point.

Regards

                      * You do not have to create a domain for the needs you mention. Go on using cached account, when you try to reach the server in home, it will ask for username and password, type the local admin user and password of server and check save box.

When I'm at home, I don't care about logging in through the domain.  I can still log into my computer, i want to set up a network at home so i can have my own network and access my desktop and server.

      Hi thunderchicken
" i don't know how to keep my laptop's settings so I don't have to adjust it everytime I go to work. " For that purpose, I offered cached account, If you do not care about it, you log on with a different profile
So if i try to ping SERVER, nothing comes back.  I can ping it by IP, but I can't access it through \\SERVER
There are two ways for this. First is a loong step
*For a home network, WINS is an ideal solution. In your home server, install WINS and DHCP. I assume you do not have static IPs assigned manually, so DHCP will take care about it. But for being authorized (this is necessary to work), you need to set up a domain. Please read the second way and I will go on explaining this way if you do not like the second way.
*In WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc there is a file called hosts. You can manually specify the name "server" to the IP you want. Open it in notepad and add the following line in it
                         yourserver'sip       server
Then repair connection in my network places properties. Now you can browse \\server
!Caution. If there is a computer exists at work named Server, the ip of your home server will be browsed if you type \\server. So please give a unique name to your home server.

Regards
