NTFS.SYS missing or corrupt Windows Server 2003 won't start

We have a PC set up as a server installed with Windows 2003 service pack (automatic updating is on). It has two disks, a master and a slave set up as a mirror disk (Both disks are identical and of the same capacity and brand). It had been running OK for about 2 years. Now for some reason it won't start. On the Windows start up screen (with the progressive white stripes) it stops half way with "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt System32\Drivers\NTFS.sys". Same happens if you reverse the boot priority so the mirror disk boots.

When trying to run a repair with the install CD, it loads files then stops with a message "The file NTFS.sys is corrupt" and press any key to continue. However it then just reboots. It never reaches the point when you can press "r" to repair.

No new hardware or software has been added to the server. It was just sitting in the office working as a server.
