However have you tried it ? Or is this just theory ?
The problem is with some corrupt files or settings on the server.

You don't state what the problems were which you had wth the server? Generally a repair install would retain all the server settings and wouldn't affect any of the software or other data on the server. Generally if there's a problem with the OS (corrupt file, not booting etc.) then a repair would sort it out.
Personally, I prefer to do a clean install when the system is messed up, then restore data from a backup. There's no harm in trying to repair it though, just make sure you have a backup!
