Question

Connecting Windows client PC to Windows Server on login screen for credentials.

Asked by: JesusLiv3s

Hello,

I have a Windows 2003 Server set up on my network. As I have seen in several companies, I want my workstation PC's (Windows XP) to be able to grab credentials from the server, and log into the server, from the main login screen (once done booting into XP)

I just want to know what I need to do and how do I get the "Connect to" selection box on.

I basically want the workstation to get the credentials from the server; the server assigning permissions, etc. I would also like My Documents, Desktop icons and so on to be hosted on the server (Maybe mapping them onto server), but would also like the ability to access the workstation Hard Drive when needed. Please explain how I can do all of this, and resources would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if the way I put this question was hard to understand, but I do not know what to call the thing I want to do, and better explain it. I hope you guys can help. If you need more information, please say so.

Sincerely,
Victor.

If I am understanding your request ...

To have the domain show on the logon window, the Client PC needs to be joined to the Windows Domain before a Domain User Account can log into the PC.  Windows Home edition (XP or Vista) can not join domains; only XP Professional, Vista Business and above can join domains.

Ok, I do use Windows XP Professional, what is it I need to do to add it to the domain of the server? Im already on the same workgroup and can remote desktop and access files of the server, I just want to be able to get the computer itself to be able to log in, and retrive credentials, rather than logging into the workstation local account.

Regards.
Victor

Is the server a Domain Controller?  You need a Domain Controller and other components to create a Windows Domain.  Once you have the Windows Domain, then the workstations can be joined to the domain and you can create user accounts in the domain for logon to the workstations.

Would you please explain what I need to do to create the Windows domain? I have already created server.local on the computer, is this what you are talking about?

And once I get the windows domain up, what do I need to do to the workstation to get it to join?

Right click my computer and coto properties, click Computer Name, click change, select the domain radio button and enter your domain name server.local, you will now be prompted for your domain administrator id and password, enter them, restart and you will be on the domain.  You can then share folders on your server and connect to them from your PC using your domain credentials when you login into your PC.  Keep in mind that when you log into the domain that your PC will develop a new user profile and some of your settings will have to be redone, such as email, background etc.

Hope this helps!

Is your server running Windows Server 2003? or Windows Server 2000?  or is it just a workstation that you named server.local?  If it's not running Windows Server, you cannot install Active Directory, and

therefore cannot create a domain.  You will be regulated to running a workgroup which consists of independant workstations.

Yes, I had the domain and active directory already set up, running on Windows Server 2003. What I needed to know was how to get my computer to join the domain, and Kutyi helped me out. Thank you for all who helped, I appreciate it.
