The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Print spooler problem on Windows 2003 server
Tags: spooler, 2003, windows, print, server
On my win2003 server i use Terminal services and every 2 or 3 days  or sometimes even more often print spooler service crashes and no one can connect with TS to the server and the already connected users can't print. Sometimes the spooler service is still running but not responding and sometimes it is stoped. when i restart the service all works fine. I even set the service to restart when it crashes but that has no effect and i have to restart it manualy.
I get two error maseges:
1.

I think it maybe has something to do with printer drivers, but the problem started after 3 or 4 months after the server was installed.

Well your guess is probably correct.
Did you install any printer drivers on the TS?
If you did, note this is NOT a best practice (actually it is a WORST practice). Printer drivers should NOT be installed on TS unless they are written for Windows Server 2003 AND tested under Terminal Services, what most drivers are NOT.
The correct approach is to create your own .INF file and map the printer (and its driver) you want to use to an existing, out-of-the-box Windows Server 2003 driver. This is described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/275495

In case you have HP printers, these are the ones supported under TS (do not worry about Citrix):
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX110571

You may need to find out which drivers you installed and get rid of them to pinpoint what the problem is.
The best alternative for TS printing is always to go for a third party product like UniPrint, SimplifyPrinting or ThinPrint. They do cost money but the amount of time you will save plus the amount of hassle you will avoid for your users and company has a price...

Tnx!  I will try what you said and see how it all works out.

I deleted a bounch of printers that were installed on the server that are not in use anymore. Printer that are now installe are:
HP LaserJet 1010
HP LaserJet 1018 (not supported on that list you mentioned)
HP LaserJet 1020 (not suppoeted on that list you mentioned)
HP LaserJet 1320 Pcl5e
HP LaserJet 5550 Pcl5

In event viewer i have event id 1111 error masseges for printers:
HP Color LaserJet 2600n , Canon L120 ,  Canon i550 , Star TSP242 Line Mode Printer.
These printers are from our clients and are not used when they are connected to TS so i don't want to install them. these printers don't have drivers built in OS so can i map them in that .ini file to  generic/text only driver so i don't get error massages.

I forgot to mention that 2600n, L120, i550, TSP242 don't have win2003 drivers and that is why i don't want to install them.

You are correct. Any printer that does not have a driver and you still want to give it a try, map to something like a Laserjet or Deskjet on the .INF file.
For the Canons check if these support any of the BJC drivers (they may).

Windows Server - Terminal Services

Hi,

Event ID 1111 : when ever your user tries login to Terminal session and are using printer redirection, you will see 1111 event id's. The reason is simple the dirver for the redirected printer is not present on the server thus the server was not able to map a compatable driver for the user and throws event ID: 1111 in the eventvwr.

Nicks
