The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Problem using PXE boot to Windows Deployment Services

Tags: Error: PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011.
Im trying to set up a PXE boot into Windows PE using WDS.

I have

WDS is residing on Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 SP2

My DHCP server is residing on Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 SP1

Since DHCP is not on my local WDS server I do not have either checkbox enabled on the DHCP tab in the WDS server.  I also have set option 60 in the DHCP server but have nothing in option 66 and 67.  This client is on the same subnet as both servers and neither sever has a software firewall enabled.

When I try to boot the client using PXE I receive a valid DHCP lease from my server but then I receive Error: PXE-E55: ProxyDHCP service did not reply to request on port 4011.

I read a few other questions here about people having the same error and tried to follow the steps in them but either Im missing something or Im having a different issue.  This is the first time I have tried to set up and use WDS or anything that uses PXE to boot so Im not very familiar with this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

Is port 4011 open?  If the firewall is on, you need to make an exclusion or turn it off completely.

You don't need either option 66 or 67.

Have you run the check on the WDS server?  Properties of the server in ADUC then the Remote Install tab.  There is a Verify button there.

No firewalls are between the client and either server.

I went to the servers properties in ADUC.  In the remote install tab I see a verify button but it is grayed out.  Also when I hit the Advanced Settings button I get the following error when I click on the images tab.  "Unable to contact the remote install server.  The server may not be accessible at this time.  The directory service has been updated with the new settings."

Is WDSServer service started?

Yes it is and I have tried restarting it several times.

Try removing WDS from Add/Remove>Windows Components by unchecking the box for Windows Deployment Services.

Reboot when it's done.

Re-install it the same way you removed it only check the box.

Reboot.

If you are using WDS in RIS (Legacy) mode then DO NOT add the server to the normal Windows Deployment Services snap-in (in Adminitrative Tools) - launch only the (Legacy) snap-in to manage the server.  Otherwise, if you are using WDS for WIM images then launch the normal snap-in for WDS and add the server to the console then manage away!

I reinstalled this afternoon to no avail.  I'm not using RIS and am just interested in the WIM image functions.  I walked through the server set up again, got it going and tested from a client PC.  I still get the same error.  I think I'm going to try to install on a different server altogether to rule out anything funky going on with this one.

Agreed.

If you want to use the "Verify" button, you have to open ADUC console directly on the WDS server, otherwise it's disabled.
Aren't there any other DHCP servers on your network? Maybe some rogue DHCP delivering wrong values to clients?
I guess setting DHCP options 66 and 67 is not going to make any problems, try it and you will see.
Also check if your WDS server is not using multiple IP addresses.

Got it working!

I had read several articles that had mentioned that I had to set option 60 to PXEclient in my DHCP server.  I just disabled this and everything is working fine.  It was probably a rookie PXE mistake but it had me stumped.

Thanks for the responses guys.
