Question

Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition - How to address more then 4GB of memory

Asked by: inverted_2000

I see a lot on this, but it's mostly just links to other sites.

I've got 3 x86 Blades with W2k3 EE 32bit on them.  There is 8GB of memory per blade.

These are going to be configured as NLB Cluster Terminal Servers.

How do I address the other 4GB of memory that is in the blades?  Use the boot.ini swithches?  If so how?

Please don't link to a bunch of KB articles either.

Thanks,
inverted

are you using enterprise edition or standard edition?  your article title and question each say different things.

if it is standard editon then you are SOL, you can only use 4gb.

if you do in fact have enterprise edition then you need to add /PAE to your boot.ini

The following is an example of a Boot.ini file where the PAE switch has been added:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /PAE

reading the article is the smart thing to do.

in the boot.ini I believe the switches are:

/3GB
/PAE

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /noexecute=optout /fastdetect /3GB /PAE

Sorry...Thinking about too much.

The Blades are W2k3 R2 Enterprise Editions.

Is this not recommended for NLB terminal servers?

by: inverted_2000Posted on 2008-01-24 at 06:53:53ID: 20733478

I also read a lot of articles.  I hear that 4GB is what I will get with 32bit OS...which is the type of W2k3 R2 EE installations that I have...isn't good to pull 1GB from the kernal...and point 3 to the applications.

What  do you 2 think.

You've already answered 99% of what I was wondering.

Thx

edit boot.ini >>
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows Server 2003, Enterprise" /fastdetect /PAE

if you are using enterprise it will work, if only standard never mind you will solution for adressing more memory then 3GB

by: northcidePosted on 2008-01-24 at 06:56:08ID: 20733495

32bit OS will make use of 8GB of memory if the applications installed are able to utilize it.  terminal server for instance will make use of it.
