The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

In order to create a software based Raid 1 environment in Windows Server 2003, you first need to convert the disks you want to be a part of the raid to a dynamic disk instead of basic.

To do this:

1. Right click on My Computer and select manage
2. Click on Storage, then Disk management.
3. Right click on your disk drives here (Disk 0, Disk 1 etc etc), and select "Convert to Dynamic Disk"
You can safely click yes on the 2 messages you will receive.

Once this is done, your PC will need to be rebooted...it will reboot twice.

Follow the same steps again to convert disk 1 to a dynamic drive.

Once both of these are dynamic disks, you can now begin to create your raid array.

Right-click on the C: volume, and then click Add Mirror. When your prompted to select the location for the mirror, click Disk 1. The volume will display a Resynching status until the mirror is built. When you see Healthy, the sync has been completed.

You now have an established boot mirror....now your going to need to make a volume for your data.

On Disk 0, right-click on the Unallocated space, and click New Volume. This will bring up a wizard. Just follow the wizard through the process of selecting a drive size, letter, etc etc. Once that is done, it will begin syncing again...same as before, when you see "healthy", then the sync is done, and your ready to rock and roll.

Hope that helps.

Thank you Sir,

But I already installed windows 2003 server on one disk, I need to made mirror with a second disk.
I already converted the Windows OS partition to a Dynamic Disk and I convert a second disk to a dynamic, but I cannot make mirror the OS disk mirror with the second one.
Please any help?

Ok...so both disks are dynamic disks.

You should be able to right click on "Disk 0" which should also be  your C: drive and click add mirror...it will then ask you for the mirror which would be Disk 1.

Do you get that far?

If you read the above guide it fully explains how to do this

From the article I posted above

"To configure an array, you first need to convert your disks from Basic to Dynamic. Start the Computer Management snap-in, located on the Start menu under Administrative Tools. Expand Storage, and then click Disk Management. Right-click Disk 0, and click Convert to Dynamic Disk (you can safely click Yes on the warning dialog box). A dialog box will warn that file systems will be dismounted. Again, you can safely click Yes, and then click OK to restart your computer. Note that this process actually requires two restarts. The first reboot is prompted by Disk Management in order to convert the boot volume device from Basic to Dynamic, while the second reboot is prompted by Plug and Play (PnP) in order to install the new boot volume device.

After you restart your computer, repeat this process on Disk 1 to convert it to a dynamic disk.

HERE IS WHERE YOU ARE *************************
Mirror, Mirror, On the Drive

After both of your disks have been converted to dynamic, you need to mirror the boot volume. This is easy. Right-click on the C: volume, and then click Add Mirror. When prompted to select the location for the mirror, click Disk 1. The volume will display a Resynching status until the mirror is built. When you see Healthy, you're finished. If you shut down or reboot your server while a volume is resynching, the mirroring process will be aborted and you will have to recreate the mirror (which I learned the hard way).

After establishing the boot mirror, you should test to make sure you can, in fact, boot from the secondary drive. This provides peace of mind that things will go smoothly in case you lose the primary drive."

"Now that your boot volume is mirrored, it's time to make a volume for your data. This is even easier since you use a simple wizard. On Disk 0, right-click Unallocated, and then click New Volume to display the New Volume wizard. Select Mirrored for the volume type, and complete the wizard with your size, drive letter, and volume label preferences. The volume will display a Resynching status until the mirror is built, as shown in Figure 2. When the volume displays a Healthy status, the process is complete. As with the operating system mirror, don't shut down or reboot your server until you see that the volume is Healthy."

mrchatila,
I have re-opened this question to allow you to review all of the comments that have been made.

Normally, the first person to give you the same advice should receive credit for the solution.

If you have any questions about the process, please review the information at this link:http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi331

themightydude,

what you posted is exactly the same instructions in the article I posted! You need to look at what other experts post before posting a response

02.12.2008 at 11:38AM PST, ID: 20877936
Ahh...I apologize for that...there were no answers posted when I began typing out a proposed solution.

02.15.2008 at 04:26AM PST, ID: 20901069
This just isn't right,
When an expert provides an answer first and another expert comes in almost 10 minutes later and provides the same answer and they get credit.
Still there is no explanation from mrchatila as to why they made this decision.

This is exactly what severly discourages experts from participating

At least credit could be given where credit is due

02.15.2008 at 06:49AM PST, ID: 20902150
I have no problem with you receiving credit...its not that big of a deal to me.

I was writing out my answer when there was no post yet...which is why my comment appeared after yours.

If an admin wants to give the points to  you, I have no problem with that.

02.15.2008 at 06:55AM PST, ID: 20902239
themightydude,

Please understand my issue is not with you at all!  It is the fact the questioner selected a comment as an answer after my post that was the same answer as my post. I understand you were typing still as I posted that happens all the time. What usually doesn't happen is a disregard to who provided the solution first. Just like if your post was before mine and mine was selected as the answer yet we both provided the technically correct and accurate information to solve the issue technically speaking you are then due that credit.
