The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Terminal Server keeps crashing with a memory error and these errors.
Tags: Microsoft 2003 Server, Terminal Server, SP2, Application Hang, Application Error Event ID#1000, 1001,1002, 1004
Hello All,

W2k3 Server SP1 Terminal Server started giving me errors and freezing with a memory error and the minute I click the OK button on the memory error. I would get winword.exe, Outlook.exe and spooler errors in the event log. So I decided to upgrage to SP2 and install all the Office sp's. Since then nothing has changed. I am still periodically getting the application hangs and the system freezes up.

Can you turn off DEP as a test? Or exempt these apps from DEP?

A detailed description of the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature in Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, and Windows Server 2003

How many users do you have on the TS system?  You should have 256Mb of RAM for each concurrent user.  Have you been checking the TS manager for users connected and idle for extended periods of time.  9 out of 10 times TS users close the session dirty.  I periodically check TS manager and reset connections over 12 hours.

03.26.2008 at 08:18AM PDT, ID: 21212549
I have setup a the TS Sessions to log off after an hour. I have 4Gigs of Memory and I have about 10 -15 concurrent users but there are around 20 users total. I have sat and watch the memory usage during the day and currently there is around 2.7 Gig's avaialble during the peak times.

I also checked the DEP: My system doesn't support Hardware Dep and I have it set for "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
Currently in the list is "Microsoft Office Excel"
Should I add the applications that are hanging or failing?

Any other suggestions? Also thank you for you help!

I would try turning off DEP all together as a test and see if yous till incur the issue.

I turning off DEP and I will reboot the server tonight.

The TS is an inherited server. I don't know if they used the correct procedure to install Office 2003 but I believe the previous guy installed it properly. Giving benefit of the doubt.
I have installed Office 2003 Service Pack 3 and any additional updates.

So far I disabled the DEP and removed a couple printers in the driver list. So far it has been stable but last week it has been quiet. I have setup Terminal Server fall back printing to on the server. I see a ton of printers that aren't needed in the list. I don't really need users installing all these printers.

I see tons of this error. I run an application called Delphi and I this error is related to the problem too.

That is usually caused by system accounts leaving handles open and close un-cleanly.

You can clear those up by using UPHClean. That will foce unused sessions to close

Only thing I can suggest is to uninstall and re-install office using the proper method to install apps on a TS Server. I'm thinking its a shotty install.
