Remote Desktops is causing high spoolsv.exe CPU usage when logging into a Win 2k3 server.

We are logging into a Windows 2003 server R2 via remote desktops. This server is our AD server as well as our print server. When we log into this server using remote desktops the spoolsv.exe process goes to a high CPU %, normally 90% - 99% after logging in. We have scanned the computer to make sure that no viruses are present. We have also installed process explorer to make sure that nothing is running along with spoolsv.exe.

If we uninstall all the printers from the computer that we are using remote desktops on and connect to the server the spoolsv.exe stays at its normal %. If we add a printer to the computer with remote desktops as soon as we log in the spoolsv.exe process goes back up to 90% - 100%. If we log in from the server or via VNC we do not have the issue.

We have installed the latest version of remote desktops as well as the newest version of MMC. We have another server in another office with the exact same setup and it is not having these sort of issues.

I've been told that Terminal Services is known to make the CPU usage spike to 99-100% randomly during logins.  I have noticed this behavior on my own server but it does not affect performance.  I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice something seems wrong.  How long does it stay at 100% and does it prevent anyone else from logging in or any other issues?  Does it help if you edit your RDP session to not allow printers to be connected?

using remote desktop(S) does not give you the option to disable the local printer. If there is a way to do this please let me know.

The Microsoft RDP client gives you an option under "local resources" tab to disable local printers, com ports, drives from connecting.  If not you can disable it completely under Administrative Tools > Terminal Services Configuration > Client settings ..  But that's kind of drastic..  So, since it's the DC, you can set client permissions per user directly in Active Directory.    I believe it's under the "Client" tab in the user's properties window, you just uncheck "Connect Client Printers at Login".

So even if your not using Terminal Server / Services this will still control Remote Desktops (RDS) and adding mapped drives and printers from local client to the server?

Yeah if it's not a real Terminal Server, but you're just using it for a single RDP session, you can still disable the printer mapping from Active Directory.  Is that what you're asking?

On the other hand, Have you installed the newest SP2 ? Before SP2,  I also got a few hotfixes from Mircosoft Support to solve some similar cases for Terminal Server...
