ML110G5 Server 2008 Raid Drivers

I'm stumped. Trying to install Windows Server 2008 x64 to a brand new ML110 G5 server with a SATA RAID 1 array configured, but during setup I am unable to locate and load a suitable driver for setup to detect the RAID array. The drivers provided by HP seem to come down in .exe files, which I cannot work out how to extract, and all the other individual drivers aren't detecting the drive.

If anyone can guide me to a solution or workaround (ensuring I still have the RAID 1 array) I would be most grateful.

Please help ASAP!

Looks like you look for driver in Proliant Support Pack. You need to insert the HP smartstart cd and under hp drivers folder you may be able to find a suiltable driver. If not, you may need to download it from HP web site. I just checked the server specification and looks like it support Win 2008 X86 (32 bit only) since it does not mention X64. I could be wrong. Check it out:

Forgot to tell you in case you never install driver from HP package. You need to extract the file by double click on exe then save it on floppy or cd to install on server.

K
lnkevin, I was thinking that that is probably the driver that HP already provided to the author.  I think he is asking what he can do with the .exe without being able to get into Windows.

Thanks for your comments guys. I'm pretty sure the driver I have is the correct one after HP pointed me to it too. To be sure though I went and downloaded it again from the HP website.

The only problem now is the extraction process so I can import the driver in Windows setup. At the moment when I use the Extract button I end up with nothing in the final folder. I am showing hidden and protected OS files in Folder Options.

So I think the main question now is "how can I properly extract the driver from the HP EXE download?". Once I do that I might be able to begin!
Download the attachment from this message. Change the file extension from .txt to .zip. Unzip it you have all the drivers.

Hi guys,

Unfortunately that driver didn't work. What I did manage to do is figure out why the extraction process was failing - I was trying to extract the package to a network drive; extracting to a local drive worked first time.

After some rooting around I found that the DL350 (I think) server has the same storage controller (Adaptec) as this ML110 G5 server - on downloading the 2003 server x64 drivers for that server, extracting to a local hard drive and then running during 2008 setup, I was able to see the RAID array and interface with it.

I'll request this is accepting as the solution but split some of the points between you for the work you have put in.

Thanks,
tigermatt
Glad you got it going, but if you were able to extract the recommended driver for that particular setup (server + 08 x64 OS), why not just use that one instead of the one from the DL350?
The one which HP provided for the ML110 G5 storage controller didn't seem to work - on running it in Windows Server 2008 x64 setup it was classified as not compatible with my hardware and did not locate the drive. The DL350 driver (x64 edition) located the drive first time.
I thought so, but I can't explain why it's available to be download at the web site. I am completely stumped.

Just in case it helps:
I've just this moment kicked off a Windows Server 2008 64 bit install on a ML110 G5 server.

Downloaded the storage driver from here:

javascript:openExternal('ftp://ftp3.hp.com/ftp1/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows/p1431394271/v45437/')

Make sure your boot sequence is: CD DRIVE > Hard Drive > Removable Drive
Otherwise the windows installer will complain that there isn't a valid volume to install on.
Just for clarification, the drivers available on the HP website for the ML110 G5 are now the correct drivers for Windows Server 2008 which supports its built-in storage controller.

-Matt
I forgot to add that I downloaded those (dated 6 May 2009) and the installer still didn't pick them up as valid drivers.
I can confirm that the list of SBS 2008 64bit drivers page at HP is still incomplete.  Only two drivers show up (neither work for the embedded SATA controller), while the Server 2008 x64 page has 4 drivers.

These are incorrect for the embedded controller:

HP ProLiant Smart Array SAS/SATA Controller Driver for Windows Server 2008 x64 Edition 6.14.0.64 (B)
HP 4/8 Internal Port SAS HBA with RAID and SCxxGe series HBA Driver for Windows Server 2008 x64 Editions 1.28.2.1 (B)
HP ProLiant Smart Array SAS/SATA Controller Driver for Windows Server 2003/2008 x64 Edition 6.12.4.64 (B)

This one is correct (and is only present on the Server 2008 x64 page)

HP Embedded G5 SATA RAID Controller Driver for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64 Editions

Downloaded the driver from this link:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3577715&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3577708&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4024#11395
I've just bought one of these servers and none of the drivers worked as it's actually an AMD Sata Raid controller in the latest models (bought Nov 09).

CP008698 is the one that worked for me, but for some strange reason, only from a USB stick and not a floppy.
the HP link is:

UK-IT,

The latest model of the ML110 is more like a desktop box than server-grade hardware. For example, my model has Intel VT support (for Hypervisor virtualisation), a different RAID controller and so on. The latest boxes don't have VT, and apparently a different RAID controller as you stated.

It's a poor show on HP's part, as I have a number of very small clients who want/need virtualisation technology for various reasons. The ML110 was always a great choice and had all the necessary features for virtualisation in a small-ish office. Speculation is that HP removed the advanced features to force you to look at a higher end ProLiant (one of the 300 series); others are saying it's simply in anticipation of the ML110 G6 release (which may have happened recently, as I've seen drivers on the HP site for it).

-Matt
Totally agree Matt, it seems like HP would rather be without the small businesses at times.

For Info, After flashing the bios from the latest one on the site (v 015 I think, Oct 09), it suddenly loses the driver for the network.

Here's the hp bits I had to install :

Network (HP Nic series Broadcom 1GB driver) - CP011633.exe
Unknown Device (HP Null IPMI Driver) - CP008464.exe
SM Bus - ICH9 Family SM Bus Controller 2930 - intel_inf_8601007.zip (don't run setup, just update driver and browse)

Hopfully that'll help others.
