The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Need help standardizing VirusScan settings on all workstations/servers, or need to uninstall/reinstall via group policy

Asked by pmcilvaine in Microsoft Server, McAfee Anti-Virus Software, Anti-Virus

I have a small network of about 100 clients.  Each client has McAfee VirusScan 8.5 installed, but the settings are not standardized and the configuration needs to be locked down.  I've tried using the McAfee Installation Designer 8.5 to generate a .CAB file that contains all of the appropriate settings.  According to the Installation Designer, by placing the .CAB file in a folder called 'MID', directly underneath the McAfee installation directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\MID), VirusScan is supposed to pick up those settings and apply them to the VirusScan installation, but the clients aren't taking up the settings as expected.

I also tried deploying a fresh install via group policy, but since McAfee 8.5 already exists on the clients and it wasn't deployed via group policy, the new installation often fails because the original version does not get uninstalled by GPO.

So, two main questions:  Does anyone know of a way to force VirusScan to accept the settings contained in the .CAB file created by Installation Designer?

-OR-

Is there a way to get GPO to uninstall McAfee and then reinstall it with the new package I created with all the correct settings?  (even though it was not originally installed via GPO)?

Thanks,
