Backing up Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain Controller and Restoring to test upgrade to 2008 AD DC

We have a Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain Controller and a secondary Win 2000 AD DC that we will be moving to Windows 2008 AD DC on all new hardware.
I am a little hesitant about doing this.

Is there any way to backup my current Win 2000 AD DC and restore it to a different machine to test the migration process?

My plan is to move from 2 Windows 2000 AD DC to one Physical Windows 2008 AD DC and one or two Virtual Windows 2008 AD DCs.

I am not installing any new OS over the windows 2000 machines. I am using all new hardware.  Would it be easier to put in place a Windows 2003 AD DC and migrate to it, then migrate to the Windows 2008 AD DC? or is that unnecessary?

Also, is there some software that I can use to test my current Win 2000 AD DC to make sure I don't bring over any problems?

thanks

mkline71: Thanks for the info I will start reading.

RE: R2, we purchased all the hardware back in April so I don't think we will be going to R2 yet.
Will that be a problem if we migrate to Windows 2008, then a 2nd machine is R2?

No you won't have issues if you do that; but won't get all the benefits for R2 until your forest is at R2 level.  Active Directory recycle bin is one of those features.
R2 is only a x64 release..just an FYI.
Thanks

mkline71: OK thanks.  My current Windows 2008 Standard server (that will be my new AD DC) is a 64bit machine.

I plan on making one (maybe 2) virtual AD Servers and they would also be 64 bit.

Since I haven't done anything with the 2008 machine, would it be wise to upgrade it to R2?
oh ok so you already have a 2008 server x64 up?  Ok that can be upgraded to 2008 R2.
It's really up to you, you can also go to R2 later, didn't realize the 2008 box was x64...good choice.

Will there be a problem running other Windows 2000 or 2003 Member Servers with a Win 2008 AD DC?
No, you will not have any issues running them as member servers.
