HP DL380 G5 SAS Expander

So, we have installed a SAS expander card, cables (same length) and caddy with disks.
I have power cable from backplane of caddy to m'board.
I have 1x sas lead going from port 1 on backplane to port 8c on sas card & I have the other lead going from port 2 on the backplane to port 9c on sas card.

Going into the p400 bios is can only see 8x disks.

Why?

I see the pairs of cables must be in similar lengths but which cables go from mboard to controller and which go from controller to backplanes?

I have 493228-006 x4
and 493228-005 x4 - about 4" shorter than above....

Thanks, i have seen that one before...

Yes i have port 8c going to port A on mboard and port 9c going to port B on mboard.
then had ports 2c&3c going to ports 1&2 respectively on caddy 1.
then had ports 4c&5c going to ports 1&2 respectively on caddy 2 (new case)

not sure on which cables i had connected (as just disconnected them all) but 100% sure the same lengths were used.

possibly firmware?

That message sometimes means the controller has failed, I know it's a bind but you'll really have to prove that out by taking the SAS expander out again.

SO, took out the module for a few minutes.  Reseated.  Removed sas expander card.  Re-fitted original setup - powered on acknowledged error message, F8 into BIOS exited and restarted and thus worked fine.

Reseated the card (but in different picx slot) cabled up as before, same error!

Can you confirm which leads go where?

To confirm i get:

Slot 0
1783 – slot 0
Command failure: (cmd=11h, err=20h, dlu=oAB:2ch)
Drive array controller failure!

We have tried it in both pcix slots
We have tried the sas card using different length cables
We have updated the firmware using the hp firmware maintenance cd v10

The onboard controller works fine without sas which is why I think there could be issues with these cards and g7’s…
I've put them in G7s several times but it sounds like you just got a faulty one. They are the correct part for the server since they're in the quickspecs. http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/13595_na/13595_na.HTML

OK, i'll try another new one.
btw, the sas card comes with 2x pairs of different lengths.  I would have expect 4x same length...
One pair's for the ML/DL370 I think, so they put both lengths in so you can match the length of the cables the server came with. A bit like the DVD rom upgrade kit comes with half a dozen different cables for different servers.
