Server 2008 - Internet Globe is showing but no web access!

Hi,

as the title might suggest, we have a server on 2008 sp1, the network connection is showing as though it is connected to the internet, the DNS forwarders are correct, as is the network card configuration, as I have triple checked each one! Other things do not seem to be working such as DNS relayed emails, also the logmein application is not connected either.

Please help!

Hi,

Did you try to disable the firewall?

If yes, what does a traceroute to 8.8.8.8 say?

ASKER

yes, the firewall service is disabled, a traceroute returns:
C:\Users\Administrator>tracert 8.8.8.8

Tracing route to google-public-dns-a.google.com [8.8.8.8]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.20.254
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  4     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  5     *        *        *     Request timed out.

This means traffic doesnt pass your default gateway, it this ip your DG?

What is the DG on machines that can access the internet? (if any)
Everything else bar this server can access the internet, the firewall/gateway is not configured to block any outbound traffic?
What does this mean? "Everything else bar this server can access the internet" ?

Everybody else BUT this server?

What is Default Gateway on other machines?
Please post output for 'ipconfig' from server and one from a working computer.
The default Gateway is the router you use to get to the internet. It may be supplied by the internet provider (AT&T, Comcast...), or someone there may have installed one like a Linksys or Cisco router.

Verify it's turn on and has the LED lit. If the LED is RED, you may have a problem with the router. Normally there is at least one Green LED lit on each router.

If the LED's are lit, you might want to turn it off & on again. Pull the plug and reconnect it if necessary. many routers don't have a on/off switch.

spoken to the router manufacturer, sorted directly with them
I object to this question being closed with no points awarded. I provided a suggestion based on the years of experience I have. I pointed the poster to the router. He confirmed it was a router related issue. I feel I should have received points based on pointing him in the correct direction.
Great to hear you got it fixed.

Shame to hear someone walking in after troubleshooting for more then an hour where we found the problem in the default gateway and with years of experience decided it must be in the router and claims the points.... brilliant! (you can have them)
