THIN CLIENT SYSTEM SOLUTION for COLLEGE

Hello Guys,

I'm looking to implement a thin client solution throughout the college.

In total we have 2000 users out of which approximately 600 users are expected to concurrently accessing the system. Also we would like the users to be able to access the system from home.

Can someone please advise which solution would be best to go for to fulfill this purpose, keeping in mind the system has to be efficient and reliable. Please also include the hardware required i.e. No of Servers etc...

Also any extra details such as no of users per server etc.. would be greatly appreciated

My company, around 2500 employee, 600 users accessing the Network/Internet (some of them are accessing frm home too), will rent a consultant for this job.

Questions

1.What apps will they be running

Terminals look at chippc
remote login through an ssl vpn that has rdp built in (ssl vpn from sonic wall) you will need approx 56k of bandwidth for each remote user at the gateway

to spec the terminal server will need to know the apps its running IE if standard destop (office, adobe reader and internet access) then you need to to some testing will a trial group but you could use esx server as will which will reduce the number of servers as well

1.Converged access (traffic shaping)

Hi,

Without knowing the apps you will need access to its hard to specify the hardware you will need to run. One solution is to run a Citrix farm. There are many thin clients available, as well as "Soft" thin clients (so you can reuse old computers).

On the server side of things you would have a citrix farm. typically speaking you can run a server with 75 users per server before the server starts to lag. Over estimating your figure of 600 to 800 you would need around 11 servers in your farm. (this is just the citrix side of things, your AD and the rest of it is not included). I run two DL360 prolient HP servers for a company that has 200 odd people accessing a wide variety of applications. The servers haven't started to lag, even though we are pushing the envelope a little.

Citrix also do a product called the Citrix Access Gateway. This will allow your users to access the citrix farm from home and on the move.

Also you can share your farm resources (the prorams you are sharing) through a web portal or a client, Between the two methods this will work for most operating systems.

Check out the brian madden links in tim's post earlier. I do recommend citrix its a good solution. There are others out there like the softgrid system microsoft is running with (which takes the thin client mainframe a step further).
