Printer is not recognised by Remote Desktop connection.

I have a computer using Remote Desktop Connection to access a Microsoft windows 2003 terminal services server, we have a printer attached as a usb printer, and the option to use the local printer is checked.  The local printer does not appear in the list of printers.

common problem.  Review the logs on the terminal server, as the connection is established, you will see a warning that the printer cant be setup.
You have to install the drivers for the printer on the terminal server for this to work.  Sometimes the only way around it is to physically install the printer on the server initially, then return it to being plugged into the workstation.

In some cases you cannot get this to work at all.  Terminal server lacks full support for all printing possibilities.

What printer is it?  Some USB printers can work fine over RDP, others fail no matter what you try.  

I have got HP laserjet 1010 and 1018s working via USB using Carls method above of installing the printer on the server itself then moving it back to the client but HP 1020s and a few others just dont work at all

I am having same issue, there is a registry fix if the printer is using dot4.    You may want to try this.
