Use 3389 instead of 3390 first off.

Then, when it asks this:
Remote Desktop cannot verify the identity of the computer you want to connect to. This problem can occur if:
1) The remote computer is running a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista.
2) The remote computer is configured to support only the RDP security layer.

Contact your network administrator or the owner of the remote computer for assistance.
Do you want to connect anyway?

Say yes.  Only Server 2008 and Vista support the new security layer.

rbkumaran,

Thanks but no go.  It resulted in the following errors that am looking into to see if possible in running in Vista....

Errors when executing RDP 5.x in Vista.

The procedure entry point SdbGetAppCompatDataSize could not be located in the dynamic link library apphelp.dll.

The procedure entry point DrawThemeTextEx could not be located in the dynamic link library UxTheme.dll.

**************************

BLipman,

I tried before and again using 3389 and 3390.  No errors result only when I enable it to warn to do so.  I do select 'Yes' but it results in the same behavior in Vista.  Using 6.0 in Vista Ultimate

Firewall and AV software are disabled.
I input the server or IP address then select 'Connect'.  Attempting ports 3389 and 3390
I then get prompted to enter credentials.
The remote connection then behaves as it's about to continue with authentication but then hangs, resulting in no error coded number.
Vista's Event log also shows no Error for the attempt.
The 2003 server also does not show an Event for the attempt.
I've also set RDP to run in compatibility more with also modifying display settings = no success.

**************************

mwecomputers,

Thanks for the URL but I saw that as well.  However, I did re-read the posting but Vista still fails in remoting into a 2003 server.  I've checked other forums and have seen other users with the same issue.

Just don't understand what the heck is going on with XP vs Vista on RDP'ing to a 2003 server?

Crazy, I have heard of this feature bouncing cheap routers but this is the first I have heard of it messing wtih RDP.  I run Vista at home through the VPN and RDP into several 2003 servers day in and day out.  I guess in my path from point A to point B nothing gets hosed by the autotuning.
If you get to Server 2008 and your file shares are slow you may want the feature again though.  That dynamic window size should be a useful feature in the future...I guess not now...
