The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

NTUser.dat locking in Terminal Services 2003

Asked by zimboman in Remote Desktop/Terminal Services, Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft Server

Hi All,
I know this has been discussed several times on this forum and elsewhere, but I have not been able to find any definitive resolutions as yet.

I have a TS2003 - with about 20 users on. I recently changed their local security levels, to normal users, as they were all local admins because of an application which needed it. I managed to update this application, and change all users to be normal users. I then used a basic GPO to further restrict their desktop and other access.

While I was at it, I cleaned up all of their profiles, the Docs and Settings folder was a mess. This server had been migrated from a standalone TS, to a domain integrated TS, so all users had profile duplications with the user.Domain format. I moved all of these profiles elsewhere, logged in as each user individually, then copied over, into the newly created profiles -  the desktop, docs and favourites folders - and setup a couple of email accounts.

This worked fine for a day or so. The next day, in the morning, remote users were logging in and getting the local profile not found message. and I got a few TEMP profile folders, and then a few user.Domain profiles being created. The NTUser.DAT file was in use in all of the original profiles.

A reboot resolved this problem temporarily. I researched this problem here, and installed the User Hive Profile Cleanup application. This does not seem to have helped. One further symtom I have found - at night, after all users have logged off - I can log in as any of the users, and the profile loads correctly. However if I wait until the morning, I get the temp profile loading...
I can't see anything in the application logs indicating it is running late overnight.

I would prefer not to have to reboot the server every morning, as they are retail and work all weekend...
