The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Crashing RDP while connecting

Tags: Microsoft, Windows Server, 2003, SP2
One of our servers, acting as file server, is running with Terminal Services in admin mode. When trying to connect by RDP, the connection dies during the "connecting..."-dialog.  Any idea why this happens?
Its "twin brother" with the same hardware, and should have the same services installed, is not having htis kind of problem.
As we haven't got any reports about problems with file resources yet, it's not a critical problem, but it's a little bit annoying when not being able to administrate the server.

Are there any errors in the eventlog? Can you connect from xp-> 2003 and also 2003 -> 2003?

The problem occurs only when trying to connect to this specific server.
We can connect to it with remote-MMCs (computer manager), but not logon with RDP.
We haven't found any relevant in the eventlog.

could it be a secure connection problem? check the last (advanced) tab in mstsc and see if it allows unsecured connection. i noticed that ws2003 doesn't automatically generate certificates for server identification, so if the client is set to secure connections only, the connection will be dropped. Please also check the properties of the connection you use in Terminal Service Configuration. See if it conflicts with RDP 6's default.

Hope this helps.

Didn't find any strange in the settings.

When I tried to connect this morning with a RDP5, it worked for the moment, but except of that one-time connection, it doesn't work.
With other words, the service is instable...

04.08.2008 at 05:49AM PDT, ID: 21304621
Did you try from multiple workstations to this particular server? Or only from one? Did you also try from server to server?

04.08.2008 at 08:09AM PDT, ID: 21306010
Yes, I've tried different XP-machines and different servers with the same result. When trying to connect to this specific server, the connection dies.

04.09.2008 at 03:30PM PDT, ID: 21319743
Have you tried disabeling the windows firewall or maybe have a look under terminal server management?

04.10.2008 at 12:39AM PDT, ID: 21322489
Firewall is since earlier disabled.

04.22.2008 at 12:41PM PDT, ID: 21414731
Not sure if it's the same problem, but we've also begun to see that user's web pages located on NFS-shares on this server isn't accessible as expected.

As the NFS-usage on this server has increased when moving some users from an old samba-server, we suspect the problem to be caused by some memory leak in the MS NFS-service. Not sure if it's the same problem as NFS and RDP don't become unstable at the same time.

After reboot both NFS and RDP works as expected for a while, but first RDP begin to act unstable and later also NFS the same.
Last reboot was yesterday, and the same day we also rebuilt the NFS-structure to be one share on top-level instead of one share per user.

So maybe the problem is solved...
/Henrik

Wow. Ok!

I hope so cause I'm running out of options. Have you tried to contact one of the moderators? They can appoint some other professional to your case.

Sorry I'm no help in this question but I hope your question does get solved.

The problem came back, escalated with halting SMB-sharing, and after adding more physical memory, the services kept healthy longer until last week...
Found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822219 which seams to match to our symptoms. The reason seams to be out-dated filter drivers in the combination with our backup software (ARCserve).
The backup admin updated the backup agent to latest SP yesterday, so I guess the problem should be solved.
