I would recommend you use a service like gotomypc.com.    You end up installing a client on your workstation, and then you can access your computer from anywhere via the internet.   All you do is log on to the site, click your computer and off  you go.

Now you can set up the service yourself which requires a little more effort.    You would need to turn on remote desktop (right click on my computer - properties - click on remote tab - select 'allow users to connect remotely to this computer).    I would also set your workstation at home to have a static IP address.  Depending on whether or not you are behind a DSL router you would have to forward port 3389 to your workstation (which is why I mention the static IP address of the workstation).    Then once that is done, as long as you know the public IP address that has been assigned to the DSL Router (Cable Modem, etc.....) then you can access your computer by typing that ip address into RDC.  You also run the risk of having some random person being able to try to get onto your computer.    So unless you are really tech savy....I would recommend doing that through gotomypc.com (or another service like that) as it would be easier on you, and a little more secure as well.

So you need to start with just setting up Remote access on the workstation as mentioned above, and then give the workstation as a static IP address on their home network.   On their router at home, you need to forward port 3389 to that static IP address that is setup on the workstation.   They will need to know the public ip address of the router so that they can enter it into the remote desktop connection software.   Keep in mind that the users on the workstation that are given permission to log in remotely must have a password on the account.   Users must be a member of teh remote desktop group in order to gain access.

Most ISP's hand out IPs, and it is possible that the public IP on that router could change.   They will need to know how to look that up in case at some point is does get switched.   That's very rare, but it does happen.   You can always pay for a static public ip from your provider, but they will charge more.   So it will just be up to the person as to whether they want to do that or not.    Have any other questions just send them this way.
