Question

Can't use Remote Desktop to server. Getting error message

Asked by: FIMC

When I try to log on to Remote desktop I get the following pop up: "The publisher of this Remote Connection cannot be identified. Do you want to connect anyway?" When I click the connect button.  I get another error that says " Remote Desktop Connection has encountered a problem and needs to close. " (See attached for screen shots)
This happens when trying to access different servers.  It was working yesterday before installing SP3 on my HP machine.

Thanks
Matt

Can you click on the "Technical Information about the error report" from the third picture in your document you posted?

by: FIMCPosted on 2008-05-22 at 06:23:08ID: 21623549

Yes but it's cryptic and doesn't give me much information. I've attached the txt file with the info.

Yes it's cryptic. For some reason I was thinking I would see error information because the info you originally posted just says MSTSC was the source of the error.  I did import it into Excel (see attachment if you are curious).

Since that information wasn't helpful I'm wondering if you can look at your event viewer and get more on the error from there; its probably in the applications log. Event ID information and any text in the description is helpful.

Also...make sure the server you are trying to remote into doesn't already have its limit of remote desktop connections. You can start the   "Terminal Services Manager" if you have the W2k3 Admin tools installed on a XP machine to see if you have too many connections to the server.

I'm able to RDP from another computer to the same server so I don't think it's a user or licensing issue.  I looked at the Application logs and there are three events grouped together that are at the same time the error occurred.  See attached.

FIMC:
I'm having the exact same problem on an XP Pro-SP3 machine. I get the same 3 errors in Event Viewer as well. I think it's related to SP3, but can't really prove it or back up my suspicion. It seems like it was working fine before SP3.

What I've done that hasn't made a difference:
*Disabled Data Execution Prevention
*Added an exception for mstsc.exe to the Windows Firewall, as well as Remote Desktop Client
*Disabled Windows Firewall

If I figure out the solution, I'll let you know, but you're not alone; for whatever that's worth...

FIMC:
I have finally given up. I've been working on this problem for about 3 days, and it's time to move on. I had in fact wiped the system clean and reinstalled everything from scratch. It worked fine for about a week, and then the problem resurfaced again. I've read articles about uninstalling a KB hotfix, but that doesn't work in my case, as the RDP ver6 came as part of SP3. I finally downloaded RDP ver5.2, and installed that. I told it to overwrite the ver6 RDP that resides in c:\windows\system32. (There's also a .dll file, mstscax.dll that needs to be overwritten as well)

I think this is more of a band-aid than a true "fix", but it's working for me right now. I have a feeling I've not seen the last of this problem, however. Hopefully there will be updates to SP3 in the future that will correct this problem.

Good luck...

The issues was with Data Execution Protection.  It must have been installed with SP3 for XP.  You can change settings for it by doing the following:
1. Open the Control Panel. (Classic View)
A) Click on the System icon.

OR

1. Open the Start menu.
A) Right click on Computer and click Properties.

2. Click Advanced system settings.(in upper left green area)
3. Click Continue button for UAC prompt.
4. Click on Settings button under Performance section.
5. Click Data Execution Prevention tab.
6. Turn DEP On for Essential Windows Vista Programs and Services Only -
NOTE: This turns on DEP for only the 32 bit Vista system programs and services. This is the default setting.
A) Don't Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only.
B) Go to step 8.
7. Turn DEP On for All Programs and Services Except for the Ones you Select -
NOTE: This turns on DEP for every 32 bit application except for the ones that you add to the list. The listed program will have DEP turned off for it.
A) Dot Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
B) Click Add to add the programs (32 bit) that you do not want to use the DEP feature.

Here's how to disable it.

1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select System
4. Click the Advanced tab
5. In the Performance region select Settings
6. Click the Data Execute tab in the dialog box that opens
7. Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except for those I select
8. Click Add.
9. The open dialog box will open. Browse and select your application.
10. Click Open
11. Click Apply
12. Click Ok
13. Reboot
