As I mentioned, I have a modem (which is also a router) as well as a wireless router. Can you please guide me how to do that port forwarding in this double router case?

I know both, the public and the private IP addresses of my PC. Now I would like to connect to my laptop from another machine over the internet. Is it possible? If so, how?

I agree with above. But you also need a public IP address too cause that's what you'll be connecting to. Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of going this route and leaving 3389 on the internet open. I use www.logmein.com for free remote access. It's free and the paid versions are worth it if you do enough remote work. Hope it helps!

I am more likely to rely upon remote desktop's security than a third party application that could be sold of at any point like Hamachi was.
I use a two hop RDP system. I have an OLD OLD machine that all RDP sessions come in to. It's a workgroup PC that has NO shared logins with the rest of the systems on my network. Once I RDP into that box, I can RDP in to any other box on my network.

You need to enable port forwarding in your router to forward port 3389 to your laptop. Then type in the router's IP address into your remote RDP client and it will connect.
You should look into no-ip or dyndns for name resolution. Most ISP's don't change your IP address often, but why lose connectivity for a day when they do.
