Question

Can I save an RDP session when using SBS 2003 or 2008?

Asked by: GTKINC

I have a SBS 2008 Server setup and configured properly.  I'm able to connect to my server and other workstations through the remote web workspace.  My question is, is there a way that I can create a remote desktop session to any of the PC's on this network without using the remote web workspace externally (through the internet)?

Additionally I'd like to save the RDP session to my desktop so that all I need to do is double click on it and I'm taken to the computer of my choice without having to access the remote web workspace via the web.

Thanks in advance.

That won't work if I'm needing to access the PC's from the External Network (from the Internet).

Not interested in a third party software.  I know you can do this when connecting directly to a PC.  I'm just trying to circumvent having to use the Remote Web Workspace.  Ideally what I want to be able to do is create the RDP file and send it to the appropriate users.  This will enable them to log directly into the assigned PC.

Well, two options. Expose a public ip address to pat and nat to the various computers inside the network. You can connect over custom ports from the outside, but setting up the pat on the firewall would let you connect to the multiple pc's via rdp. I'm not a fan because this opens pc's directly to the internet (only the password is protecting them). Ex. you rdp to 12.34.65.78:1234. Set that address and port to nat and pat to 192.168.1.100 port 3389 (RDP). It will take some setup on the firewall, assuming there is one.

Another is for you to establish a vpn connection to the server (or firewall). sbs 2008 has that option, then you can launch the rdp connection using the internal addresses.
