Question

Terminal Servers and User Must Change Password at next Login

Asked by: tilbard

We have a new edict from the lords on high requiring that we force new users to change their passwords on their first log in. The problem is that 90% of these users only ever access our domain via Remote Desktop into a Terminal Server farm. So, with their accounts appropriately set to force a password change, they get a prompt that they can't login to the server until their password is changed (see attached screenshot). The clients are running Windows XP (anywhere from SP1 to 3) or Vista SP1 with Remote Desktop Client v6.1. The Terminal Servers are all 2008, and set to Client Compatible encryption level, with NLA NOT required.

This is only a problem with RDC v6.1, as older versions don't attempt to authenticate you prior to getting to the server login screen. However, we NEED to use 6.1 in order for EasyPrint to work.

Is there any workaround for this problem, short of making users log into a LAN location their first time?

It may be a lame workaround, but I believe if you leave the credentials blank both username and passowrd, and just hit enter, it will bring you to the actual server login screen.

I cant seem to find a copy of RDP 6.1 on my network that does the pre-connection auth request anymore (I used to see it with windows XP SP2) so I wonder if there isnt a newer version of the RDP client than what you are using that is available if you do windows updates?

Good Luck

Leaving both the username and password blank just causes it to re-prompt for username/password repeatedly. The pre-authentication only occurs when connecting to a 2008 server it seems. 2003 goes straight to the login screen. I've checked via Windows update, though haven't actually gone out to look for a newer version on MS' site myself yet. I'll give that a whirl and see if anything is available. I can't imagine that would be a problem though, as the machine I'm testing from at the moment is itself Server 2008 SP2 (same as the TS).

I think I see the difference now, on my server 2008 machines, if I right click on "computer" and go to "properties" then go to "Remote settings" I have the second radial "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop" Selected. Evidently this turns off network authentication.

Will your Easyprint still function if you change this setting?

by: tilbardPosted on 2009-08-13 at 12:11:17ID: 25091747

EasyPrint does work that way, however the servers are already set up like that unfortunately. :(

Also just to rule it out, I tried it on a brand newly configured server that hadn't had any GPO's applied yet, and it had the same trouble.

Not possible without forcing the less secure NLA disabled option, unfortunately.
