The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

USB Printer not recognised on Terminal Services Client
Tags: usb, terminal, printer, server, services
I have a client who used Terminal Services to access his SBS2003 server. On his remote workstation he has an Epson C1100 printer which is not recognised within his Terminal Services session.

I had a look at the setup for this printer. It is on a port called USB002. How can I make Terminal Services recognise this printer?

First step is to manually install the drivers on the terminal server. Open Printers and faxes, on the menu bar choose server properties and then drivers and add. Once done, the users printer should automatically connect, next time they log on, so long as you have checked printers under local resources of the remote connection "box".

I should have explained better...

Printers with a parallel port are seen perfectly. It's the USB port thats the problem. My previous understanding was that a Terminal Services session should inherit all client printers which are connected to ports named LPT, COM and USB

I don't see how I can make a printer driver which is installed on the Terminal Server, reference a physical port on the client.

So is it valid to install the driver on the Terminal Server? The server will not have the same port.

Make sure you have checked printers in the local resources section of the Remote Desktop connection window. Assuming you have done this, if you haven't installed the drivers, for a printer whose drivers are not native to Windows on the terminal server, in the event viewer you will likely see print driver errors when the user connects.
You need to install the drivers there. Once you do this, and make a new connection, the printer will be connected using a "virtual port" TS001, TS002, etc. on the server, which should map it to your local USB port. Having said that, USB printers are not supported by Microsoft though they usually work, or can be tweaked to work. In a pinch I have installed the printer as if connected to the TS as well as the local/client system, and manually changed the port to a TS port on the TS. I don't believe it is a normal method but has worked for me with some odd printers.
Printing from TS can be flaky sometimes, especially with USB printers. I am sure others will have some suggestions for you as well.

I had this issue too.

Terminal server running on windows 2003, needs a printer with 2003 support - not all printers have this, and many many all in ones do not.

Bottom line, if your printer isn't supported by 2003, you'll need a plan B

Plan B could be as simple as using a different driver - if it's a laser printer - try the HP laser jet 2 driver - most lasers are compatible with this one.

In our case, we sent down a cheap brother laser with built in ethernet (the 3070 if memory serves - cost $170) - I was able to install the printer on our print server, and it worked perfectly.
As a backup, I installed the printer using a local LRP port at the remote site so they could print if the network was down.

Thanks for the relpy. I'm just waiting for feedback from the client. The factor I neglected to mention is that while the server is in the UK, the client is in China!

I checked out the spec on this printer before recommending that they buy it. The Epson website lists Server 2003 amongst the supported operating systems. So today I decided to download and install the driver on the server. I was suprised to see that the driver is only listed as being Win2k/XP compatible. So i'm unsure of the 2003 support.

I had assumed that the problem was related to the printer being connected to the USB port. This printer also has a parallel port, so I've told them to try a parallel cable at the remote office.

Watch this space...

I was wrong about the USB port being the culprit. I manually installed the driver on the server and it is working now.

In fact the client is completely blown away by the fact that he can sit at his pc in China, and in just 5 seconds get a printout sent from a terminal server in the UK.

Thanks for your help!
