Hi All,

I have an SBS Server with 5 clients that was working well up until Tuesday evening and for some unexplainable reason refused to work correctly on Wednesday morning by not allowing the clients to use shared drives and applications on the server.

I have tried everything I know but nothing seems to work. So I finally decided to remove one client from the domain onto a workgroup and then add it back on again, but now I get the error message; The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.

Every solution that I have seen on the web does not seem to work.

Can someone please explain why this happened and how to fix it before I completely rip what's left of my hair out????

This problem is due to recent automatic security updates -- but is fixable by downloading a patch from here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896427

I would also note that it doesn't sound as though you've joined your workstations to the domain correctly, because I have only seen this problem when that is the case.  If you did not originally connect your workstations to the SBS network using the http://<servername>/connectcomputer method, you really should fix that.  You'll need to do the following in order to accomplish this:

The following needs to be done with the client machine:
1.  Log in with THAT machine's LOCAL administrator account.
2.  Unjoin the domain into a WORKGROUP
3.  Change the name of the computer
4.  Delete or rename the following directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Clients
5.  Ensure that the network configuration is set to allow for automatic IP Address and DNS Server IP's (DHCP enabled)
6.  Reboot

Then on the server, from the Server Management Console:
1.  Remove the client computers if it still shows in the Client Computer screen on the Server Management Console
2.  Add the client with it's NEW name using the Add Computer wizard

Then, go back to the client machine and join the domain by opening Internet Explorer and navigating to http://servername/connectcomputer

i have done as instructed above but when i try and connectcomputer i get the error message;

The list of users and computers cannot be found. Before you continue, ensure that the client computer has a wired network connection. Also, if you have a router performing DHCP service on your network, verifty that the router is configured to use the computer running windows sbs as the primary dns server.

I have, and it is configured that way and still no joy...

Please post an IPCONFIG /ALL from both the server and workstation.

Ok. After trying absolutely everything suggested on the net and by Microsoft, I found that the easiest way to resolve this problem was to unbind and then re-bind the server IP Address.

Once done, the clients seem to attach back onto the domain using the connectcomputer command.

Thanks for you suggestions anyway.
