Hi
I'm an IT Consultant supporting a number of local businesses with their IT requirements, PC repairs etc.
One of my clinets was running an old version of SBS (97?) on a P2 based NT4 server - Exchange 5.0 etc. I couldn't support this configuration and was concerned that if the server went down due to hardware failure, we were going to struggle to get it back up again. I have since replaced it with a Dell Poweredge running Windows 2003 SBS and migrated across the exchange mailboxes etc and created a new domain.
Everything works ok, except that the network lags horribly. It takes random lengths of time for client pcs to login, 5 minutes or so sometimes - sticking at "loading personal settings" often.
Network drive access, network printing & exchange server access can also be very slow. The overall view from the client is that the old server was much faster, which I know can't be true, so there must be a problem somewhere.
His network was 10 BaseT, with 3 x 10mbps hubs on a ring. I re-cabled his offices and changed the hubs to 100mbps switches. haven't seen much improvement to be honest.
When i first set this server up, I had problems with continually losing internet access, which i think was caused by DHCP conflicts on the server and the router. I turned off DHCP on the server and left it up to the router, which fixed the problem. Not sure if this information is relevant, but thought I should mention it. All clients PCs are statically addressed and the router is the gateway. The server is also statically addressed.
From reading up on this forum and others, I think the problem might be related to DNS. I found the following thread :
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Microsoft_Network/Q_21890053.html?qid=21890053#16927816... which at first glance seems to be much the same as my problem, but to be honest i couldn't follow the thread or really know what steps from it are required.
I have remote access to this server, but not to the client PCs. I can visit the site, but in doing so there may be long delays between your posts and my replies. Please bear with me.
It seems likely that I will be asked for a netdiag log from the server, so here is one :
