The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Server will not reboot after any installation - operating system not found
Hi

We have a Windows  SBS 2003 server (premium edition). It's an IBM e-server x-series 206m with 2gb ram, was built at the end of Aug 06. It has 2 Maxtor disks in a RAID. There is a small network of about 10 client computers, all running XP professional. There is Active Directory on the server and no other domain controllers in the network.

The problem is that every time we install anything on the server - e.g. SQL server - the next time we reboot the server either as part of the install or at a later date, the server won't boot. It finds the disks and reports that the RAID is Optimal and then we go into the usual sequence but instead of seeing the Windows screen we get 'operating system not found'.

We have done all the obvious things like looking at the boot sequence/setup/bios  - all seems fine
We take it back to the engineers where they report that it boots okay and there are no problems.

It's been back to the engineers many times - their solution is not to install anything on the server but we use it for development and need to have certain things running on there (like SQL for example). Also I can't accept that simply installing something and rebooting is causing this problem and have lost faith in the engineers. The server is not used as a workstation and these are not crashes, they are planned reboots. Also the server works fine as a file server

We're reasonably techie but not very knowledgeable about hardware problems or the inner details of things like Active Directory  so all help/thoughts would be appreciated - just as long as 'I don't know' is an acceptable answer!

Many thanks

Anna

Anna,

Sorry for the delay in responding... it's been a busy week!

This sounds like your problem is most certainly a RAID issue... what type of RAID ARRAY is configured?  0 or 1?  Is there a HARDWARE RAID controller installed?

Since this is SBS Premium, SQL server should be no problem at all to install as long as you are using the SBS's Premium Technologies Disk to install it.

What happens if you reboot without installing anything?

To help further, please post a complete SYSTEMINFO output.

Jeff

Hi Jeff

Thanks for your reply.

Regarding RAID, it is a type 0 and there is a hardware controller on board.

We're too scared to reboot the server at all now :-) - but seriously - it often does reboot okay if nothing has been installed. And it also occasionally reboots okay when something has been installed.

Also an update since posting the original - after installing SQL it wouldn't reboot at all. We tried several times and then left it in disgust and returned the next morning, whereupon it booted fine with no problems. (I swear I'm not making this up!). The SQL installation was okay and is being used.

Sysinfo as below and thanks very much for your help!

Anna
