Hey peeps.
I have a client that is running Windows 2003 Enterprise server as a HOST system and running SBS 2003 std in a VMWare visrutalisation environment.
The thing is the SBS is running like a dog. A sick lame one at that.
I want to backup and restore the current SBS after formatting the SAME box and take SBS onto the box and not a virtual image of it.
Now Ive tried installing symantec veritas backup exec and i kid you not 4.5 hours later it was installed .. NO JOKE :(
So i have uninstalled backup exec as it was just erroring and all sorts of rubbish.
I have thought of Ghost onto a USB 2.0 drive but i have heard of bad things for that. I repeat this is going straight back onto the SAME Hardware. So this would be a dream. I don't know if installing ghost would literally KILL the box though after my backup exec experience.
SO I resorted to some VERY long bkups.. like i said running like a dog.
These bkups have failed 7 times now.... this server is goosed .. Dual Zeon 3.2 with 8GB !!!! of ram etc... SATA drives. THIs server should be AWESOME... but my ZX spectrum ran better progs that this :) ...
ALL WITH NTBACKUP as this is the ONLY app that will work and i dont need to install.. cant verify bkups though.
All within the VM .... BTW
I have backed up system state
i have backed up Exchange *however the restore doesnot show an entries. I am putting this down to it being an 'all or nothing' restore
I have backed up the Data drive
I am TRYING to backup the c:\ drive... proving difficult though.
Then I am going to flatten server. Please verify next steps are in correct order
Reinstall SBS 2003 with same computer name and domain etc...
restore c:\ ntbackup restore
resotre system state ( I was planning to a directory restore mode from windows startup) I'm sure this will a cinch.. ANy tips would be welcome though) I believe this is the ONLY way.
restore exchange. ntbakcup restore
restore e:\ data ntbackup restore
How does this sound... OR can anyone else suggest anything ...
The guy who built the server has been a great help with the VM side and really wants the client to be ok. He just cant explain why it runs like my gran :)
I was meant to start build sat morn after a friday bkup.. its now sunday evening and i still have c: drive backup left to do . NEXT BUSINESS DAY Tomorrow.
So I need answers faster than ASAP..
Thanks in advance peeps... This is an important one
