Question

SBS 2003 - Fax wizard won't see multiple identical modems

Asked by: DrDave242

I have a customer with two identical PCI modems (Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc) in his SBS 2003 server.  He wishes to use one for inbound and one for outbound, which shouldn't be a problem at all.  Both modems show up fine in Device Manager - no bangs, no X's - but when the customer runs the fax wizard, it only sees one.  What's going on?

Hi DrDave242,
Can you query both modems?
Did you check to see if they are not on the same com port?
Some fax modem drivers are not win 2003 compatible, Choose a windows standard 56k driver instead.

Are you saying when the customer runs the "SEND A FAX wizard"?  or "Configure FAX Services" wizard?

Because in sending a fax, the user would only see ONE FAX Printer, which is not the same as seeing a modem.  The routing rules of which modem the fax goes through are configured within the Fax Services Console.

You can read more about this at http://sbsurl.com/fax

It's the "Configure Fax Services" wizard that only sees one device.  Sorry, I should have been more clear on that.  Still no resolution for this one yet, and I'm upping the points accordingly.

Regarding querying the modems, it gets a little confusing.  The customer said that he could initially only query one modem, but he then uninstalled and reinstalled fax services, and after that, he could query them both.  There's still only one showing up in the Configure Fax Services wizard, however.

Hi DrDave,

Did you try it using standard widows drivers?

I would still refer you to the document I linked above (http://sbsurl.com/fax) which has complete installation and configuration instructions which should be followed to ensure that things work right.  If these instructions have not been followed from the start, then it's difficult to know where things stand.

I can't seem to use a generic Windows driver.  When I try to update the driver in Dev Mgr, even though I tell it to let me choose the driver from a list, the existing driver is the only one that appears in the list.  And before you ask, that's with the "Show compatible hardware" box unchecked.  Will I have to uninstall the driver from both modems in order to be able to choose a different driver?

I can give a little more information now, as I logged into this server earlier today.  Modem #1 is using COM3, and modem #2 is on COM7.  (Modem #1 is the one that works.)  I don't think the customer had ever completed the "Configure Fax Services" wizard, as I ran it today and found he had not chosen an inbound routing option.  I went ahead and specified that so that the wizard could complete.

Before I ran the wizard, I tried to query both modems, and was successful (on more than one occasion).  After the wizard ran, however, I could only query modem #1.  Trying to query modem #2 gave me a grammatically disappointing error: "The port the modem is attached could not be opened."  Any clue?

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2007-01-30 at 12:43:43ID: 18431035

Did you try changing it to a different COM port?  Such as COM4?

by: DrDave242Posted on 2007-01-30 at 12:45:29ID: 18431050

Can't do it, for a couple of reasons.  COM1 through COM6 are already in use, and whenever I try to change the COM port on that modem to something that isn't in use, I get another error saying that the port has been opened by another application, and renaming the port could cause problems with that application.  I have no idea what application it's referring to, though.

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2007-01-30 at 12:57:59ID: 18431147

What are they being used by... because that's highly unusual for that many COM ports to be in use and is most likely the cause of your problem.

I wish I could tell you.  How can I determine what's using them?

by: DrDave242Posted on 2007-01-30 at 13:40:05ID: 18431505

It's definitely got something to do with the COM ports, because I switched them (put modem #1 on COM7 and #2 on COM1), restarted the Fax service, and now modem #2 is the only one that shows up in the wizard.  Modem #1 now cannot be queried with the Fax service running, but #2 can.

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2007-01-30 at 13:55:27ID: 18431620

Look at your System Information (START > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to see what's on each port.

by: DrDave242Posted on 2007-01-30 at 13:59:34ID: 18431658

Well, now I can say that it's not entirely the COM ports either, because after some rearranging, I'm back to modem #1 being on COM3 and modem #2 being on COM7, and now the wizard only sees modem #2, whereas the last time it was in this configuration, it only saw modem #1.  I just don't get it.

Also, System Information shows information for COM1 and COM2, but that's it.

What card are you using for your extension ports?

by: DrDave242Posted on 2007-02-20 at 12:17:22ID: 18573557

Update:  After much weeping and gnashing of teeth, we were able to ship the guy a completely different modem (a US Robotics Something-or-other), and once he got it installed in his server, things worked just fine.  I still don't know why the two Conexant modems wouldn't work, but one Conexant and one USR are working with no problems.

by: TechSoEasyPosted on 2007-02-23 at 02:57:53ID: 18594905

Not unusual at all... modems are sensitive to their environment... and many of them are cheaply made.
