I have a client who are outgrowing their current 20/40gb tapes, and i am trying to find ways of keeping their backup hardware without the need for more spending.
Is is possible to have 2 separate SBS style backups? The sevrer has 3 drives, plus the mailstore and system state, and at the moment all that is just too big for 1 backup, so i want to have a rolling backup i.e. put 2 drives on 1 days backup and the rest on the next day.
I know that if i use the bog standard backup utility it will work, but this isn't an option as all the media has to be named etc etc
Can this be done using the backup utility that comes with SBS?

Yea this is an option, we want to keep the costs down as much as humanly possible as they've spent a lot on our services over the past month or so this is an oldish server, all servers that we've installed over the past 2 years we do do external drives as backup solutions.
another issue is the size of the external drives that have to be taken home each night, i know the 2.5" drives are pretty much ideal, but then again they do cost money. One big fat Catch22 !
You can just exclude enough information from the SBS backup to fit on tape, then run that backup MWF, then schedule ntbackup to handle what you excluded from the SBS backup on TR.
But unless your clients are a bunch or dinosaurs, or they archive frequently, that tape is quickly going to become more headache then it's worth.

This will not be answering your question at all - just thought i'd offer advice for future Installs. Have you considered External USB drives? £50 each, perfect solution where the user is backing up alot of data. We tend to use 8 drives for our standard rotation. Mon/Tues/Wedn/Thurs/Fri1/F
