The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Cannot install .NET Framework 3.0 SP1
Tags: Microsoft, .net framework 3.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1, Microsoft Update, Numerous
Hi folks

I am tearing my hair out over this one.  I am trying to install this recommended update from M$ which has come up on the Windows Update list for our SBS2003 SP2 server.  It has refused to install thus far and I have removed all .net software as per a M$ KB article on the subject, downloaded the software from links in the article & reinstalled .net 1 through to 3 as per the instructions. No effect.

These are the errors coming up in the event log:

Is your antivirus disabled while this is trying to install?

If not, try doing that...

Hi Jeff

Thanks for your suggestion.  I'd already tried that and I have the problem sorted now.

It seems that there was some kind of glitch in the .net 3 installation which I found out when I tried to install .net 3.5. (which has v3 SP1 with it)  I uninstalled v3, ran the M$ .net uninstallation tool over it to get rid of the remaining debris & reinstalled v3.  It still wouldn't take the SP1 package but did accept it when I ran the v3.5 package, so it's all up to date now & seems to be working OK.

My initial thought was that I was wondering why you have even installed .net 3?  Do you have a specific application installed that uses it?

Not that I am aware of but it had arrived as part of windows updates so I assumed that the reporting pages of SBS or some of the 3rd party software on the server was using features that it updated.

Are you suggesting that I'd be better off without it?

Cheers
Steve

.Net 3.0 was never an automatic update.  So if you don't have a use for it then remove it.  If you've installed Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 in a side-by-side configuration, then you'd need .NET 3.0 though.

Hi

I, as the originator of the question, asked for it to be closed as I have found the solution myself, but I thought it best served the community by being left on the database instead of being deleted as there are numerous posts about this problem on the net but little in the way of answers.

Jeff is a great guy , I have been grateful for his help on several occasions and, if the only way in which you can resolve this is to give him the points, so be it.  However, this time I had found my own answer, as I clearly explained in my second post.

Sorry Jeff

I haven't received an email about our last response & didn't know you'd posted again.  Thanks for the tip & I'll check to see if anything's using it.

Cheers
Steve
