The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SBS 2003 Reboots everytime I upload (copy/paste) a file using remote desktop
Tags: Microsoft, SBS, 2003
This problem just started happening and I am hoping someone here can help. I will try to give as much detail as possible.

When I use Remote Web Workplace to connect to the server I can get logged in to the just fine. I choose the "optional settings" as always (to connect the hdd) to allow my files to be transferred between the client and server, but  can no longer upload files to the server. I have a specific file that I usually update weekly by coping from my client computer and then pasting onto the servers desktop.

I have not installed any new software and have not changed any user profiles. I'll tell you upfront that I am not the most advanced IT admin. I was asked to setup a server for a small business with 4 clients. I am running a Dell PowerEdge SBS 2003. Even though I know little about running an exchange server it has worked flawlessy since I set it up a year and a half ago.

I would think something like this would be a security issue, but I have changed nothing on the server. Thanks in advance. I can get any other info you may need to help me fix this problem

Wow... that's a new one as far as I've seen.  The server actually reboots just by you trying to transfer this particular file?

What errors are shown in the System or Application event logs immediately before the reboot?

Yeah, it's the oddest thing. It's not just this particular file, it's any'file I try to copy from the client and paste on the server. What's odder is that I can copy/paste from the server to my client no problem, just not vice versa.
OK, here are the errors from my event logs:
Application:

Is there any CD/DVD burning software installed on either machine?  (especially the SBS?)

Also, can you please post the results from running SYSTEMINFO at a command prompt?

Thanks.

There is CD/DVD burning software on the client only, but it doesn't matter what computer I use to logon remotely this happens. There is no burning software on the server.

Is it truly "just" rebooting or is it actually blue screening with automatic server recovery booting it after the blue screen?  You should see some kind of event in the log about the nature of the reboot. "Previous shutdown unexpected or something similar.  If it is a blue screen, a detail of the blue screen might help.  This could have multiple causes\solutions as it sounds somewhat likely to be a corruption or a file in a locked state.  Do other users see the same result if they try to upload a file?  If not, try deleting your profile on the server to see if something is hosed there.  If they have the same problem, try removing and reinstalling file and printer sharing.  Another thing would be to ensure every component of what is on the server is updated with the latest patches.  Before doing anything make sure you have good backups!!  Cheers.

It is truly rebooting. Nothing in event view files about it, which I find odd. I'll make sure everything is updated, but I'm pretty sure it already is.

Does any other account have the same problem?

Yes, all the account have this problem. It doesn't seem to matter which user you login as.

"Yes, all the account have this problem. It doesn't seem to matter which user you login as."

I hope you mean all other ADMINISTRATOR accounts.  Since non-administrator accounts can't log into the server's desktop.

I'd be curious if there are any other MSDTC errors in the System Event Log because it sounds like this issue:

Jeff

There were no other errors. I am reviewing the article now and will give it a try. I'll let you know shortly.

OK, I review the article and followed the directions, but it did not work. The server rebooted when I tried to paste a file onto it.

I did however get an error when it started up that "At least one service or driver failed during startup"

Here's what was in Event View after this last reboot:

Under Application: Source: MSExchangeIS     Event ID: 1194   -  Accept clients on external interface MAPIRPC failed with error 0x4b1.

Event ID: 5603 - Exactly the same as in previous post

Under System:  Event ID: 6008   The previous system shutdown at 8:37:01 AM on 3/4/2008 was unexpected.

Source: Service Control Manager   Event ID: 7000  -  The QuickBooksDB service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

I have checked the server and everything all updates have been run. I am stumped.

Rather than looking at the errors AFTER the reboot, you need to view the ones BEFORE.

There are no errors from before the reboot (which I find odd). Should I clear all the events and then make it reboot? I know I shouldn't have to do that, but I thought it may provide some error messages that would help figuring this out.

what type of file are you trying to copy/paste?

Also, does this happen from any other remote connection?

The file that I copy/paste weekly is an excel spreadsheet, but I have tried all different types such as a small txt file, jpg and others.

Yes, this happens no matter which computer I use for the remote connection. There are only three users with admin access and I have tried all 3 accounts and they make it reboot.

The problem has been fixed, although I am not sure why. Here is what I have done since yesterday and it's hard to imagine why any of them fixed would be the fix :

Defragged HDD
Offline defrag of exchange data file
