Server SBS 2003

Client: MS XP ver 2002, SP2

today, my Outlook began producing the error below whenever it trys to send/receive mail.

Task 'Microsoft Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004011D) : 'The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists.'

To resolve the issue, I have done the following:

1.  Added the server name to the /etc/hosts file (192.b.c.d    sbsservername)
2. In Outlook on the client, I verified that the "Send mail immediately" was selected.

I also turned it off, re-started outlook, and the problem persisted. I selected the option again and restarted Outlook.  The problem is still occurred.

3, on the server, I reset the mail settings by rerunning the CEICW

Since these actions did not resolve the problem, I'm at a lost.  Any direction?
