Question

How to setup broadband router on SBS2003 standard server w/exchange using Iprimus internet service with routed static IP

Asked by: stevenvel

I have been supplied with Open Networks 625 broadband router to use with Iprimus ADSL Internet service.
I have also been advised that Iprimus is a bit different to other ISPs and the type of static IP they supply.
Iprimus allocate a routed static IP which apparently is not necessarily fixed and is likely to change if there is a major change to their network.
I am intending to use SBS 2003 with exchange and have already setup the server with one network card using the setup/install wizard. The server LAN IP is set to 192.168.15.100 and the default gateway is set to 192.168.15.1 DNS is set to 192.168.15.100
Normally I would disable DHCP on gateway and use DHCP on server. MX record would point to static IP issued by ISP for exchange to work. In this scenario - using routed static I, Iprimus have advised that I would need to reconfigure my server to get internet to work. I have been advise to install an additional network card for internet traffic.
Please advise/confirm how I should go about this? Use a second network card? If yes what are the steps involved in reconfiguring my server to accommodate extra NIC? Is static routed IP compatible with exchange server environment?

All you need to do is forward port 25 from your router to the static IP of your Small Business Server

Then you need to make sure that the MX records for your domain point to a an A record you've created that points to the static IP from Iprimus as well.

Thank you.  When you say all I need to do......
I assume there is no need for me to install a second network card?
Leave server as is?
Also, the Open 625 has come pre-configured with:
subnet range: 210.50.xxx.xx/30
subnet mask:  255.255.255.252
modem ip:       210.50.xxx.xx
client ip:          210.50.xxx.xx
pri dns:           203.xxx.xx.xx
sec dns          203.xxx.xx.xx

What do I need to configure in order to talk to the router? (my LAN is on a different subnet)
Please be as descriptive as possible (I have basic networking skills)

Now you've confused me

It should go  dsl -> router -> servers

turn DHCP off on the router.

on the router port forward 25 to the static NAT'd ip of your SBS

Turn DHCP / DNS on on the SBS, as well as make it a Domain controller via start -> run -> Dcpromo

Hello stevenvel,

you don't need to use 2 network cards, that is only interesting when you have ISA, and I assume you don't use isa and have the SBS 2003 STD edition.
btw, SBS 2008 doesn't support two nic's, so you'd better use only one nic now.
For your network setup, please have a look at this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sbs/2003/plan/gsg/appx_b.mspx
and
http://sbs.editme.com/network

make sure your sbs is the dhcp and dns server.
use the 'connect to the internet wizard' to setup your internet connection, email, .... .
do NOT use dcpromo on an SBS, SBS is already the DC with the FSMO roles if you did the setup correctly (and the WHOLE setup).

as for mail, you need to fwd (NAT) port 25 to your SBS servers IP on your router.
You also need an mx record and an A-record (like mail.mydomain.com which points to your external fixed IP of your network)

Regards,

suppsaws

Hi Suppsaws, thank you for your comment.

I think I have I have a solution. I have investigated 2 nic option suggested by ISP and clarified this with a third party. Apparently, the broadband modem supplied by ISP and routed static ip means that there is no NAT available in modem (only single internet connection). I have installed a second NIC in server (for internet connection). The SBS server will handle NAT/DHCP/DNS. I am yet to test it live at customer site but I am quite confident it will work. I can ping the modem ip which is a promising sign.
I will report back once once I have confirmed/tested with ADSL service.

you could use a dual nic option, but I mostly choose single nic option with a hardware firewall in front which does the natting.
for example a Watchguard Edge for a small company:

I have tested server at customer site with ADSL service. I just want to confirm - it is  working.
Thank you for your comments.
