Cannot join XP Pro client to SBS2003 domain

We just purchased several machines to add to a SBS2003 domain.  (We inherited this business situation, so I do not know the history of the server).

It is a SBS 2003.  It does NOT have Service Pack 2.  And I am trying to add a new outta the box XP Pro laptop to the domain.  When doing so from the laptop, I get the error "specified server cannot perform the requested operation".  HOWEVER, the laptop name appears on the Server in the "Client Computers" container - but it appears disabled (with a red x).  So it appears to be communicating, but never enables.

I feel like I am just missing something stupid.

Some facts that may be factors:
I am not using the connectcomputer web command.  I am just going into Properties of the laptop and moving it from a workgroup to the domain.
The SBS is not the DHCP Server, the router is.
And, of course, SP2 is not applied yet.

Any ideas where I should go next?
