SBS 2003 to R2 Cal?

If I have a server running SBS 2003 with 15 sbs device cals, will they still work if I upgrade the server to SBS 2003 R2 or will I need to purchase new or transition licenses?

The existing licenses for SBS are still valid and will still be valid.  You don't have to buy new licenses, there all the same

Nope, not necessarily true

The CALs will work fine there's no R2 CAL per se, thats without question BUT the real question is whether or not you own R2 and are entitled to use it

R2 is classed as a different product - its basically "SBS2005"

You cant just update to it (legally) like a Service Pack - so unless you bought R2 in the first place (in which case you'd probably have installed it) or have Software Assurance (SA) on the original purchase which does entitle you to upgrade to R2

Actually SBS 2003 can be upgraded to SBS 2003 R2.  There is of course a cost involved but you don't have to have SA in order to upgrade.  The cost for the upgrade to SBS 2003 R2 Standard is approx $299, product T72-01415

ah, well I bought the server from dell, and the r2 disc and license was included

If the license was included then you are absolutely fine and the CALs will work seamlessly

Just dont want to see anyone fall foul of MS Licensing police :-)
