A bit of background:
I took an internship with an accounting firm and after doing a bit of book keeping work for them, I came to realize that the computer network that they had set up was absolutely horrible. I logged on to the server at one point and saw that service pack two for the server had never been installed over a year after it was released. I tried to install it, only to find that the person who had set up the network had made the system partition so small that there wasn't enough room to update the server, much less install the new software that we wanted.
So, one Friday I backed up the entire server, which is primarily used as a file server, and began the process of reinstalling Small Business Server 2003. Forty hours later and what seemed like one big stream of continuous error messages, the server is back up and running and no one in the office knows the difference. However, all the actual server functions are essentially non-existent at this point.
The biggest problem that I'm having is that I changed the domain name during the install so I could completely move away from the old configuration because it had a lot of problems with it, and now I can't get any of the workstations to see the new domain. if I log on to one of the servers with newdomainname\username it prompts me to change my password(the setting I implemented on the server) only to stop me after I've changed the password and tell me that the domain is unavailable.
However, if I log on using the old domain name and username, the users have kept all of their settings and applications working perfectly fine. Essentially, the business would run perfectly fine from where it is now because everyone can access the file server properly and use the internet without any problems, but I use the server to administrator our anti-virus and would like to begin using Exchange Server as well, and I can't until the domain problem is resolved, or at least that's what I'm seeing.
One of the route problems I believe I'm having is I installed a Cisco 871 router and I think the server and the router are competing with DHCP settings, creating problems.
I'm having a lot of difficulty with this because I'm having errors equivalent to a lot of the posts I'm finding, but I don't have the server randomly shutting down or any of those similar problems. If I need to reinstall and do something differently or if you need more information, just ask for specifics. My general tech level is pretty decent, but my knowledge with servers is virtually none.
