Browse All TopicsWhen I started my job I inherited the task of maintaining an aging SBS 2003 server. It hasn't been updated in years and it's at the point where I really need to get SP2 amongst other important updates into it to fix problems and secure it etc.
I was reluctant to update it straight away incase failed updates in the past lead my predessessors to abandon updates.
Anyway, before I install SP2 I have been reading up on the worst case scenarios and trying to prepare for all known issues with the install.
I wanted to install Small Business Server Best Practices Analyzer before installing SP2 to check exactly what updates have been previously installed among other useful things.
Problem is, it won't install!!! It gets past the inspecting machine part and then a dialog box kicks up with the following:
Title of box: SBS BPA Setup Error
Body of box: Failed to install catalog files.
When this box is closes there is no installer and the software remains uninstalled.
I have googled these terms to death and just can't find anything related to it as if it has never happened to anyone before!
My biggest concern is that I read one that this error about failing to install catalog files can happen during an install of SP2 itself. As it has happened trying to install BPA, I am expecting this to happen in SP2 install.
I had planned to do a back up at the end of the week. System State backup (we usually use Veritas but I aint taking any chances)
And then hopefully install SP2 on friday night so I have all weekend to fix any issues that may occur. I read that on the whole SP2 goes in ok if you don't have Broadcom network gear.
As this is the only production server onsite I want to get this right and don't want to rush it at all.
Any ideas what is causing this message and why I can't find any other info on it? There's no error codes or anything.
Perhaps I should go ahead with the SP2 install and hope it fixes whatever is causing this then install BPA after. But I did want to check the server over as I have no idea what Service packs have been installed in the past but I am prett sure SP1 is installed and that SP2 would tell me if it wasn't
Thanks
