Question

This portion of the remote web workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control Error.

When a user tries to connect to the remote web workplace option within SBS 2003, using a PC with Windows XP SP3, the following error message displays.

"This portion of the remote web workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control"

This then prevents them from using the remote desktop option, although Outlook Web Access and VPN access continue to work fine. Two users currently have the same problem and this must be due to either Windows XP SP3 or a recent Windows Update.

Both users have tried adjusting the active X and general Internet security options within Internet Explorer, but to no avail.

How can this issue be resolved?

Basically it is usually a security issue. Usually with Firefox or IE7. Not sure if this is an issue with IE6.

Try the above steps. I had the same issue and it fixed it for me

SP3 disables a required active-x component. This may be the problem. You can usually re-enable in internet explorer but others have found they have to edit the registry.

Hi,

I had the same problem with a new installation of XP-SP3 and IE-8.  The above solution did not work in this configuration.  I deleted the 2 keys but the control is not visible in the Manage Add-ons window.

Deleting additionally this key and the remote desktop works:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{7584C670-2274-4EFB-B00B-D6AABA6D3850}

Just and FYI

Lorenzo's solution was requitred to get it working on IE7 with SP3 fully patched to 5/14/09

The last key he mentions was deleted and then it started working.

So it is not limited to IE8
