can not recieve smtp mail directly to sbs 2003 exchange server.

I have recently setup a sbs 2003 echange server to recieve smtp mail, and much to my dismay it does not seem to work.  I tried to edit  my dns setting to point to the to my public ip but i am partially unable to confirm weather or not the change to my "a" record and MX records are working.  when I try to confirm with dnsstuff.com I get this message: [ERROR: I was unable to get an answer from the parent servers [ns57.1and1.com], when I tried to find the NS records for mail.mydomain.net.] when I use wormly I do recieve an email myemail@mydomane.net , but when I send a new email from my gmail account it gets bounce back with the following error.The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 <ajoseph@paradigmtelecom.net>: invalid address (state 14). and last but not least when I try to telnet to my public ip using port 25 it comes back with 220 mydomain.com instead of mydomain.net.  
I've tried everything that I can think of could you please give me some assistance.
