Question

Email to exchange server rejected

Asked by: degoodwin

I have an SBS 2003 with exchange running on it.  I was using pop3 mailboxes on a hosted site and just tried to change over to exchange based email. I made the correct MX record change on my dns server on the website.  When I try to send email to the domain I now get this message, regardless of who the recipient is.

209.200.xxx.xxx does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 550 sorry, no mailbox here by that name. (#5.7.17)
Giving up on 209.200.xxx.xxx

I know the mx record is working because I can RDP using the mail.domain.com names, so the mail.domain.com is resolving to the IP address.  I can also Telnet on Port 25 to it and it responds.  What is causing the error?  The account has a cablevision internet connection, I only mention it b/c cablevision sometimes blocks port 25, but they are not doing this b/c I can telnet.

You need to check the format that the mailboxes are using in SBS.

Check against a particular User their mailbox ALIAS.  Try using this, and also try postmaster@domain.com

Download smtpdiag.exe from microsoft.com and test the mx from an outside source.
The command line is
[smtpdiag "administrator@123.com" "administrator@246.com" /v]
This will return all the results to confirm that your smtp (25) is correct.
If you were previously using POP3 to download email were the clients using the exchange or pst files?
Each User requires a FQDN email address (test@246.com) and I'm sure they have one.
Please post the mx domain if you require further.
Another test location is mxtoolbox.com

The problem was with the company hosting the domain.  They did not switch over from the POP3 mailboxes to the exchange server fully.  Just a simple click of the mouse to fix it.

Using the smtpdiag tool would have shown the problem as identified.
Some appreciation for the info would be warranted.
Thanks
