help re-installing sharepoint 2.0 on sbs2003 server ( msde2000)

i previously asked the question- how to get to the area that allows you to do this ( http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Server/SBS_Small_Business_Server/Q_24002150.html) and I guess I closed the questions too early!

The problem now is this error message from the components while installing: 'error occurred while installing Windows SharePoint Services and creating your intranet site." and/or " the MSDE component did not install correctly" ( or similiar )

if you read my first question, i explained that this new server was 'commandeered' by a tech doing anything he could think of to get sql2005 running (...he un-installed the msde that came setup out-of-the-box for sharepoint.
i tried running the setup a second time, this time having sql2005 stopped. this didn't seem to make a difference, still got the same errors.
i also tried downloading the msde2000 desktop engine and running this brought up sql2005 install. ( since this is a production server, i backed out of this). i'm hoping someone doesn't tell me that the msde2000 has to put on first
