The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SBS 2003 Slowdown and Freeze

Asked by anon-anon in SBS Small Business Server

Tags: small business server freeze

Basically what happens is that the Client PCs notice a slowdown in the normal operation of their PC - Outlook loses connection to server, the PCs slow right down.  If you pull the Ethernet cable out, the PCs return to normal (obviously without net connection).

If you go to server and Ctrl-Alt-Del, the server will not even show the login screen, just the background is shown.

If you reboot into Safe mode, it works generally ok.  Reboot back to normal mode, sometimes it will not even boot - usually stops progressing at "Applying computer settings..."  If the server is disconnected from the network, sometimes this helps with bootup.

Once server is back 'online', network cable plugged back in, then you get a random period of time before it happens again - somewhere from 0 to 3 hours.

I thought it was a client PC that triggered the problem, but the PC in question was disconnected during one of the freeze ups.

There is nothing obvious in the event logs, and no spyware or viruses have been found.

It runs a raid array mirroring with 2 x 160 gb drives.  There are two partitions.  The C: drive with Windows etc only has about 1.5 gb free space.  The D: drive with all our data and the Exchange data has about 40 gb free space.

This is an extremely frustrating issue.  There just doesn't seem to be anything that is obviously wrong.

I am thinking of copying the data to a NAS to allow our office to continue to function, then imaging the server onto another PC.  Send this live and see if the problem reappears.  If it doesn't, then it must be a RAID issue / memory failure / CPU problem, right?

Any comments greatly appreciated...
